Objectives and competences
Objectives
- The scientific basis of the fundamental aspects of security and the transnational importance of the sector, taking into account the range and complexities of security threats in an international context: climate change, environmental disasters, food risk, terrorism, computer crime, financial crime, etc.
- The importance of a holistic approach to security management that incorporates the varied aspects of safety and security, which, in addition to the traditional activities carried out by police and security forces, private security firms, fire protection services and civil protection, encompass a range of tasks frequently carried out by chemists, engineers, physicists, geologists, criminologists, doctors, and other professionals (the degree does not provide professional training for these profiles but it does give students a general understanding of their relationship with the general field of security).
- The need to adapt to major changes in contemporary society and to acquire a specific analytical language through which to discuss and address the challenges encountered in the different areas of security.
- To work as professionals in the broadest possible security community, making the most of opportunities in the international and transnational sectors.
Competences
- Understanding the historical, social, economical and juridical context of the security to improve the management.
- Identifying the challenges that bring up the threats in the security.
- Taking part in the theoretical debate so many like in the practical resolution of the dilemmas of security.
- Identifying the structure and the functioning of the political systems, their institutions and their administrations with special reference to the Spanish case to identify the competent actors in each case.
- Interpreting the theoretical and empirical explanations about the human behaviour and its incidence in the field of the security.
- Identifying and applying the techniques of analysis of the public policies and its cycle of implementation.
- Identifying the legal framework applicable to the international institutions, as well as the main mechanisms of cooperation that there is between them.
- Identifying the main axes of conflict of the international stage, as well as applying the instruments for their resolution.
- Applying the systems of organization, planning and management of the human resources in the several corporations.
- Relating the foundations of the economical world and Spanish dynamics with the social conflicts.
- Initial capacity to plan the security in public and private corporations.
- Identifying and evaluating the risk factors that fall upon the national and international socioeconomic activity.
- Handling the concepts and the language applicable to situations of emergency.
- Being capable of leading, to communicate and to intervene in stages of conflicts.

Recommended applicant profile
Mainly the degree in Security is directed to students who recently have finished the studies of high school and who want to orientate their professional future towards the sector of the Security. This degree is also open to professionals of the security and safety (police, firefighters, etc.) that they fulfill the requirements of access foreseen to the valid regulations.

Pre-enrolment
Students that have studied abroad and who wish to study at the University of Barcelona may be admitted to EHEA bachelor's degree courses. Procedures for gaining admission will depend on the qualifications held by each applicant.

Placements
Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment.They are therefore included in the academic record. There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
