Understanding groundwater pollution to protect and enhance water quality
  • European Comission, Horizon Europe Programme
  • Call HORIZON-CL6-2022-ZEROPOLLUTION-01-01
  • PI at the UB: Cristina Domenech
The UPWATER project aims to assess preventive measures for minimizing chemical and pathogen release into groundwater. To achieve this, the project entails increasing scientific knowledge on pollutants, developing passive sampling methods, identification and quantification of pollution sources, modelling tools to update hydrogeological models, and risk analysis. Additionally, it focuses on creating bio-based engineered natural treatment systems for groundwater pollution mitigation, evaluating their performance, and simulating scaling-up. The project will validate these approaches in three case scenarios (DK, GR, and ES) with diverse pollution issues, socio-economic contexts, and hydrogeological conditions, involving local stakeholders in a participatory approach for policy recommendations.
UPWATER has received funding from the European Union under grant agreement No 101081807.
