Socio-spatial fragmentation in Spanish urban areas. Challenges and proposals for social cohesion
This project tackles 21st-century social and economic challenges, focusing on the growing social inequality and socio-spatial fragmentation in large cities and their suburbs. It addresses the emergence of vulnerable spaces, complicating social cohesion, particularly at local scales. The concept of the "fragmented city" is central, depicting the socio-spatial structure in post-Fordist urban areas. The research, centred on major Spanish cities, aims to understand and map this fragmentation, exploring its causes and impact on daily life. Unique aspects include a multiscalar approach, emphasizing micro-spatial levels, and the use of new data sources and advanced statistical methods to inform policies combating vulnerability and social exclusion.
Socio-spatial fragmentation in Spanish urban areas is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the Spanish State Research Agency and the European Union Next Generation EU funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan under grant agreement PID2022-139465OB-I00.
