Quality by Design towards Safe and Sustainable by Design: the Role of Management Systems Standards and Networks for Sustainable Biopharmaceutical Innovation

This Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities-funded project (code PID2022-141597NA-I00) fills knowledge gaps in the intersection of design and sustainable innovation management, focusing on the (bio)pharmaceutical sector. Analyzing the implementation of Quality-by-Design (QbD) and Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) guidelines, it explores their impact on sustainable innovation, specifically in interaction with Management Systems Standards (MSSs) and Networks. While MSSs align with QbD and SSbD, and different networks might facilitate their adoption, their conjoint benefits for sustainable innovation are unclear. Employing mixed methods, including case studies, text mining for sustainability-related patents, and longitudinal econometric analyses, the project contributes to design, sustainability and innovation literature.
