One Health approach to understand, predict and prevent viral emergencies from bats
The OneBAT initiative adopts a comprehensive approach to studying viruses in European bats, expanding beyond virus-centric investigations to understand key factors influencing their spillover to humans. Focusing on high-risk pathogens (COV, FILO, and LYS viruses), the consortium considers viral families varying in prevalence, tissue tropism, shedding, transmission routes, and adaptability to models. This approach, affecting virus identification and study methodologies, aims to enhance understanding of emergence likelihood. OneBAT serves as a pilot study, providing insights into bat species and viruses relevant to the project's timeframe or future concerns, offering a foundation for broader investigations beyond the selected pathogens.
The project is funded by the European Union Horizon Programme call HORIZON-HLTH-2022-DISEASE-07.
