Contribution of Naturalized Urban Ponds to the environmental sustainability of cities
The research general purpose is to evaluate how NUPs contribute to achieve key environmental objectives linked to the transition towards more sustainable cities and provide knowledge to support informed decision-making by managers. Specifically, the project aims at determining how NUPs contribute to i) climate change mitigation, ii) climate change adaptation, iii) sustainable use and protection of water resources, iv) protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems, and v) pollution prevention and control. The project is coordinated by Daniel von Schiller, University of Barcelona and the research team consists of scientists with different expertise: ecology, hydrogeology, and environmental psychology.
The project (TED2021-130330B-I00) is funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the Spanish State Research Agency and the European Union Next Generation EU funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
