The resilience of tourism and the mitigation of climate change: the case of rural tourism destinations in Spain
Tourism’s great vulnerability to the effects of climate change calls for a new model that transforms traditional production and consumption models, to mitigate the pressure of tourism on the environment and society. Tourist destinations have a key role in reducing emissions, as they bring together different groups of tourists and non-tourists who can work to achieve decarbonization, combining this aim with greater resilience. This project aims to analyse the current state of work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in rural tourist destinations in Spain through examining and evaluating these destinations’ awareness of their responsibility, the need to mitigate their effects and the measures they have taken. The current situation provides a valuable opportunity to work towards the decarbonization of tourism in rural areas, which have become increasingly popular destinations since the pandemic. This project (TED2021-132384B-I00) has been financed by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the European Union through Next Generation EU funds.
