Society

The Hub for Global Sustainability not only addresses the goals of the green transition, starting from foundational knowledge and continuing with the identification and analysis of problems, but also emphasizes the transfer of knowledge to implement proposed solutions and influence society as a transformative agent and accelerator of change.

Àgora Sessions

At the Hub for Global Sustainability, we organize scientific sessions open to the public with the aim of creating a space for dialogue and reflection on topics of general interest. These sessions, which we have named Àgora, provide a frame to address current and relevant issues from a rigorously scientific perspective, promoting critical analysis and active participation from various sectors.

Àgora is conceived as a space for interdisciplinary debate, where we invite experts, researchers, and representatives from civil society to share their experiences and perspectives. This allows us to achieve a comprehensive and enriching view of the topics discussed, often directly connected to our areas of action or work nodes.

The main objective of these sessions is to foster open and inclusive dialogue on the most pressing issues affecting us as a society, creating a space for building solutions and promoting shared knowledge. In this sense, Àgora not only seeks to disseminate scientific knowledge but also serves as a platform to connect science with citizens and other social actors, aiming to build a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

We would love to have your participation in future editions and enrich this space for collective reflection with your contributions!

Citizen Science

A proposal of this nature must be framed within the realm of citizen science, with a collaborative, participatory, and distributed vision of knowledge that extends beyond the professional and scientific spheres. In this regard, we assign a specific role to the local community, involving social organizations, schools, and secondary education institutions working or interested in topics related to sustainability.

We are part of several projects that incorporate this methodology, among which the initiative «Dona'm ales» (Give Me Wings) stands out. It is co-financed by the University and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) under the Ministry of Science and Innovation. This initiative introduces citizen science as a process that allows students to participate in the construction of scientific knowledge. Activities enable exploration of various applications of citizen science and the development of a citizen science to implement in their educational institution. It includes the creation of hybrid educational materials for secondary education students, focusing on science for biodiversity conservation.

Another example is «I-CHANGE», which aims to raise awareness about climate change and promote sustainable behaviours to mitigate its impacts. It tackles environmental challenges from two perspectives: citizen empowerment through citizen science and understanding the impact of everyday individual choices on the environment. Actions are distributed across eight Living Labs (six in Europe, one in Israel and one in Burkina Faso), with the Barcelona Living Lab on Extreme Events taking centre stage. It is coordinated by the GAMA Applied Physics group at the University of Barcelona (UB), it focuses on the impacts of rainfall, extreme temperatures and air pollution.
