The Faculty of Chemistry has the highest and strongest scientific output at national level, as demonstrated by its consistently strong position in national and international rankings in recent years.

The Faculty of Chemistry has strengthened the internationalisation of its research and expanded collaboration with the business sector. We work to address key challenges and to promote continuous renewal that facilitates knowledge transfer. We also strive to strengthen links with the professional sector and with society. All of this is made possible thanks to the commitment and collaboration of the entire university community.

Get to know the Faculty

The Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Barcelona is a leading centre within both the Catalan and Spanish university systems. It has been consistently recognized for years as the best public university centre in Spain for studying chemistry, according to both national and international rankings. At present, we offer not only Bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering and the double degree in Business Administration and Chemistry, but also Master’s degree programmes and doctoral programmes. Our international vocation is also reflected in our participation in four Erasmus Mundus Master’s degrees.

Organization and structure

The Faculty of Chemistry has a governing team made up of the Dean, the Vice-Deans and the Academic Secretary, together with the Faculty Administrator. This team is responsible for the leadership, coordination and proper functioning of the Faculty’s academic, research and administrative activities. The governance structure also includes the Faculty Board and its delegated committees, the academic committees, and the coordinating committees of the Master’s degree and doctoral programmes. These collegiate bodies ensure the participation of the entire university community in decision-making and in the continuous improvement of the Faculty.

Academically, the Faculty of Chemistry is organised into three departments, which are in turn structured into six departmental sections, constituting the basic units for teaching and research. The departments are responsible for the teaching assigned to them by the academic committee, as well as for promoting and coordinating research activity. Each department is headed by a Director, supported by a Secretary and a Department Council composed of teaching staff, administrative and service staff, and student representatives.

Administration

The Faculty Administration is the unit responsible for managing the administrative and management services addressed to students and academic staff, as well as the technical, administrative and service staff (PTGAS) assigned to it. The Faculty Administrator is the senior official responsible for management at the Faculty and acts as the delegate of the University’s General Management.

The services provided include: location, internal organisation, staff and contact details.

Sustainability and safety

At the Faculty of Chemistry, we work to ensure a sustainable, safe and environmentally responsible environment. Sustainability and safety are integrated into all teaching, research and management activities. The Faculty incorporates sustainability as a strategic axis of its operation and promotes actions aimed at environmental efficiency, ecological responsibility and continuous improvement. At the same time, the Faculty has protocols and procedures in place to ensure safe and appropriate working conditions for the entire university community. Activities related to sustainability and safety are carried out in a coordinated manner between the Vice-Dean’s Office for Safety, Health and Sustainability and the Faculty Administration.

Activities at the Faculty

We host activities aimed at enriching the experience of members of the UB community. As a student, you will find activities that support you from before you join the Faculty, such as open days, through to employment forums and entrepreneurship events, and including graduation ceremonies and ongoing engagement as alumni.
