Objectives and competences

The master's degree in Urban Tourism is an opportunity to train in a professional field of great current and future dynamism, in a context of rapid transformation of cities, consolidation of the smart city paradigm and the emergence of the urban environment as a tourist setting. It differs from other master's degrees on general tourism, since it incorporates two new areas: entrepreneurship in urban destinations and the generation of knowledge and tourist intelligence.

The master's degree is a training proposal that responds to a growing demand for regulated knowledge in urban tourism, at the postgraduate level, in a context of rapid transformation of cities, consolidation of the smart city paradigm and the emergence of the urban environment as a tourist setting.

The general objective of the master's degree is to train high-level professionals and researchers to exercise various professional profiles, consolidated and new, and for the design and management of projects related to tourism production and consumption activities and activities associated with tourism in urban environments.

The master's degree is aimed at graduates in Tourism and, given the transversal and multidisciplinary nature of tourism, university graduates in disciplines in the field of human, social, economic and legal sciences who want to acquire advanced and specialized training to work in the professional fields of urban tourism.

Organization and methodology

The programme of studies consists of a total of 60 ECTS credits that can be taken full-time in one year (60 ETCS), or part-time in one and a half year (45+15 ETCS) or two years (30+30 ETCS). But it is recommended to take them in an academic year.

The master's degree is face-to-face and the subjects are taught at the Faculty of Geography and History, of the University of Barcelona, located on Calle Montalegre 6, in the heart of Barcelona, close to the main sites of the city.

The main teaching language is Spanish.

Each teacher sets out the various possible assessment modalities. The evaluation is based on the European system, with continuous evaluation, with the presentation of various works and tests throughout the course (exams, individual and group work, exercises, etc.). Attendance to classes is generally mandatory. Although each teacher may indicate specific formulas, at least 75% of the classes (including tutorials and practical activities) must be attended in each subject.

Final work

The final master's degree course has 15 ECTS credits and is essential to obtain the degree.

The subject provides the student with the knowledge, skills and prior attitudes necessary for the realization of a project in a topic related to the field of urban tourism. The master's degree is of a mixed nature, oriented towards both professional practice training and research training, and this is projected on the possible orientations of the Master's Final Project.

In the case of research-oriented work, the preparation of this project represents the final stage of a research process:

  • Reflection on the problem to be dealt with, the approach of the question(s) on the project, whether research or professional, and familiarization with the existing knowledge around it.
  • The collection of material (bibliography, documentation, testimonials, fieldwork, etc.) and the processing of the information obtained.
  • The design of the structure of the work and its drafting.
In the case of a project with a professional orientation, it is about developing a synthesis work that provides an applied proposal in the areas of work related to urban tourism and its management.

For the preparation of the final master's degree project, the Coordination of the programme will assign each student a tutor in accordance with an established procedure.

In general, the final master's degree project can cover any of the subjects taught in the programme. In relation to the format of the final master's degree project, this must not exceed 120 extension pages (2,000 characters per page).
