Objectives and competences

The master's degree in Music as Interdisciplinary Art offers an attractive proposal for theoretical and practical work on facets of music that, normally, the academic world does not have much consideration, such as the link between sound and cultural activities such as plastic, audiovisual or literary creation or classical concert activity or popular music. It also offers the possibility of doing internships in centers linked to music and, in this way, the professional approach to this world is completed.

The master's degree in Music as an Interdisciplinary Art is unique because it treats sound as a catalyst for cultural activity, that is, the active presence of music and its agents (the creator or the public) in current cultural life. It offers courses on theory (dramaturgy, musical anthropology, thought, analysis of the sound) and on practical activity (technological music, jazz, popular music, music and image, neuromusic) that provide the student with a panoramic and complete view of music as a living cultural and creative reality.

In addition, the student has the opportunity to participate in the creation of an interdisciplinary show, attend debates on interdisciplinary topics and do internships in companies in the sector, which allow to know closely the professional situation of the moment.

Organization and methodology

The master's degree is developed mainly through classroom activity in daily sessions from Monday to Friday, distributed among the different subjects, as it appears in the official schedule. In many of the subjects, teaching responsibility is shared between several teachers, coordinated by one of them, which appears in the schedules and other documents. Of all the teachers of each subject, the virtual campus (intranet) provides a means to contact them.

In addition to the theoretical teaching activity, teachers may propose practical activities linked to the content of the various subjects, as well as other activities related to the learning of the students themselves, which must not be necessarily developed either in the classroom, or in person and which, exceptionally, could be outside class time, given the nature of the master's degree, linked to the poster of musical shows in the country.

Catalan is the University of Barcelona’s own official language, and as such it has institutional and administrative uses. In university teaching, Catalan and Spanish are used as official languages of Catalonia. The subjects of the master's degree, by virtue of what is contemplated in its Verification Report, can be taught in Catalan and / or Spanish, indistinctly, according to the indication of each of the teachers, who have the freedom to choose any of the two languages to teach. However, during the first semester, most of the teaching is taught in Spanish, in order to facilitate the gradual adaptation of foreign students.

Approximately

, of the 90 credits offered, 16 are taught in Catalan. In this sense, it is highly recommended to follow a course, such as those offered to UB Language Services or, before being a student, by different means (see the guide “Catalan Learning”)

The works of each subject or the final master's projects can be written in Catalan, or Spanish. Any other language, as it is not included in the Master's Verification Report, cannot be admitted.

The organization of the External Internships corresponds to the coordinator of the same that will ensure that the enrolled students contact those companies and / or institutions with which the master's degree maintains links. The admission of students by these companies and/or institutions is not the responsibility of the master's degree, which will always seek an alternative when necessary.

Evaluation

The evaluation of the subjects corresponds to the teaching team of the same. During the first days of class of each subject, the teacher will explain the detail of the evaluation procedure, which has previously been published in the corresponding Teaching Plan.

With regard to the Master's Final Project and the Memoirs of Practice, continuous monitoring will be carried out between the student and their director/coordinator and between June and July the results will be presented to an evaluation committee.

Calendar

During the first semester the teaching of the compulsory master's degree subjects is developed and in the second semester the optional subjects are developed.  In order to compensate for the teaching hours of the two semesters, during the first one some optional subject is also taught.

It must also be taken into account that the internship and master's degree project must be developed throughout the course although the deadline to submit them to the evaluation is June (or, if applicable, also September).

Final work

Master's degree students must carry out a research work equivalent to 10 ECTS credits and submit it for reading and defense before an evaluation committee between the last week of June and the first two of July (optionally, also in September). To perform the work, the following indications must be taken into account:

1. The master's degree coordinating committee will ask students, at the beginning of the course, for a degree and a summary (which may be provisional), and some key words to be able to assign a director or director of the Master's Final Project, preferably among the master's faculty.

2. According to the assigned director, they will have to define and outline this proposed topic, which must meet the conditions of being totally unpublished and sufficient entity to be treated from the point of view of the investigation.

3. They must adjust the research procedures, bibliographic consultation, development and presentation of the work according to the field of research in which the subject is framed. The works can follow multidisciplinary paths because this is the basic orientation of the master. Whether it be history, sociology, anthropology, aesthetics, documentation or any of the branches of musicology, it must be in tune with the ordinary uses in these disciplines.

4. Once it has been drafted and submitted for reading, it will be done in the period mentioned. Therefore, it will be necessary from the beginning to have a very tight schedule to meet the deadlines.

5. If the research dedication forecasts do not predict that in the months of June-July the work will not be in a position to present, it is advisable not to enrol and leave it for the following course.

6. Given the nature of the master's degree, the possibility of completing Master's Final Projects of a performative nature is contemplated, without prejudice to the research part that bases it, and in the understanding that the master's degree does not have sufficient means to guarantee the performativity of the result.

For more information, see the Regulations of the Faculty's Master's Degree Final Projects.

Mobility

The master's degree is taught mainly at the University of Barcelona (Faculty of Geography and History, Montalegre, 6). Some sessions will be offered at the headquarters of the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona (Faculty of Letters, Avda. Catalonia, 35) and the Esmuc (Auditorio de Barcelona, Lepanto, 150). The information on the place of instruction will be clearly exposed in the official schedule of the master's degree.

The master's degree also has the possibility of taking advantage of international mobility plans to carry out a study stay at another European university through the Erasmus+  Program or, also, the Erasmus+ Placement program to carry out internships abroad. Tutorial action plan

The coordinator of the master's degree, among other functions, has to attend to academic doubts in the organization of the master's degree. The coordinator of the master's degree in Music as an Interdisciplinary Art is Josep Lluis Falco.

The doubts of an administrative nature, can be attended by both the coordinator of the master's degree and the Secretary of Master's and PhD of the center.

Regarding the doubts about the content and evaluation of the different subjects, it is necessary to consult the teachers of each of them. In relation to the choice of tutor for the monitoring of the Master's Thesis, in the case of a choice of great importance in the planning and elaboration of the research, the coordinating committee of the master's will suggest the most appropriate teacher in each area, according to the specialty of the teaching staff and the weighting and balance of responsibilities between all the teachers of the master's degree, in order to guarantee the intellectual dimension of the work to be carried out.

In order to be able to effectively monitor the development of the master's degree, the student will try to participate in the preparation of surveys on the teaching staff, an action that will be required at the end of each of the semesters. In addition, group tutorials will be carried out throughout the course, with the master's coordinator and, if applicable, another member of the master's teaching team, to capture the development of the course. With the information received, those responsible will be able to evaluate the progress of the subjects and accommodate contents and didactic procedures to the needs of the master's degree.
