Objectives and competences

The master's degree in Advanced Studies in Art History analyzes the relations of thought in art (theory, criticism and aesthetic thought), of artistic heritage in its various manifestations (monumental heritage, collecting, museography, market, curating and artistic tourism). It also focuses on editorial production, the globalization of art and the relationships between the different artistic disciplines: visual and performing arts, cinema and the audiovisual world.

It is structured according to two specialties. A specialty is intended to specify knowledge about historiography and methodology, which requires the rigorous elaboration of research in art history.

The other specialty is intended to explain and experiment in activities related to artistic collecting (museums, foundations, centers and private patronage), the art market (fairs, galleries, antique dealers, auctions, etc.) and the dissemination of art (education, editing, criticism and media).

All this leads to the development of a final master's degree project that offers students the possibility of accessing doctoral courses. The master's degree is aimed at graduates in Art History or related disciplines who want to delve into the research mechanisms to prepare a doctoral thesis or apply knowledge to dissemination and the artistic market.

Organization and methodology

The teaching of each subject involves a minimum of 45 face-to-face hours and is organized in three-hour sessions to promote debates and/or trips to museums, galleries, art centres, etc. as required by the corresponding contents. The teaching of these subjects has been scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, within a time slot that goes from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with the relevant breaks. Wednesdays are free and available for seminars and/or field trips of common interest.

The number of students per subject depends on whether they are compulsory or optional. It should be remembered that the master's degree is proposed under a maximum of 30 new students. The spaces, teaching resources and facilities are the ideal ones.

The teaching plans corresponding to the different subjects specify the relevant specifications.

Evaluation

As a general rule, the evaluation is continuous and within the academic period set for the subject, in accordance with the sequence of the curriculum and the framework calendar approved by the University

The single assessment is recognized as a right of the student who, when exercising it, waives the continuous assessment. In order for a student to be eligible for the single assessment, they must request it within the deadlines set and with the procedures established by the Academic Committee of the center.

More information regarding “Regulations on the Teaching Plan for subjects and the assessment and qualification of learning at the UB (877191 Governing Council, 8 May 2012)” in Chapter III of evaluation and qualification of learning.

The reassessment system is aimed at all those students who have not passed the final evaluation on the closing date of the continuous evaluation and single assessment processes. Students who want to upload a grade cannot be submitted.

The evaluation criteria and the grading method are explained in the corresponding course plans of the subjects.

Each teacher sets out the various possible assessment modalities. Continuous assessment is based on the new European system, which determines the presentation of various evidence throughout the course (exams, individual and group work, exercises, etc.)

Class attendance is not mandatory, although recommended. Each teacher will be able to indicate specific formulas for continuous assessment and, therefore, for more information we recommend consulting the relevant teaching plans for each subject.

Final work

Presentation
It involves carrying out an individual research project, carried out under the direction of a tutor chosen by the student among the professors of the Master's degree and/or the professors of the Department of Art History who have the degree of doctor.

The deadline is defined according to the call for the academic year. If the student does not submit or suspend it, he/she must enrol again.

Features

The Master's Thesis (TFM) subject involves an integrative exercise in the training received in the degree and allows access to the doctorate.

Students must apply the knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies acquired in the master's degree to carry out a research project on a topic related to the field of Art History studies. Given its characteristics, it must be registered in the last semester of the Master's degree studies.

The development of the TFM represents the final stage of a research process:

— Reflection on the problem to be dealt with, the approach of the research question(s)
— Compilation of material (works, documentation, historical testimonies...) and processing of the information it contains.
— Design the structure of the work and the writing of the research. In the case of a project with market orientation and dissemination of art, it is about doing a work linked to the knowledge acquired and its application in society.

The extension of the TFM will be between 80 and 100 pages of 2,100  characters with spaces (30 lines of 70 spaces), apart from the possible annexes, and according to the criteria established by the University of Barcelona that can be consulted at the following address: www.ub.edu/criteris-cub/ (currently a specific center regulation is being developed). It may be submitted for reading at any time during the course, always within the deadlines corresponding to the enrolled call.

Evaluation

The Assessment Committee will be made up of three members of the Department and/or external specialists. In all cases, it is essential to have the degree of doctor.

The grade must be numeric (0-10) with detail of one decimal, which will be obtained from the evaluation of the content of the text and the evaluation of the oral presentation and public defense.

It is the exclusive competence of the Master's Academic Committee to propose specific prizes for students, as well as to assign the Distinction mark when deemed appropriate.
