Objectives and competences

The master's degree in Anthropology and Ethnography deals with social and cultural anthropology, a social science that aims to study the processes of human sociability from a comparative perspective; more specifically, the question of cultural diversity.

In addition to this cross-cultural perspective, social and cultural anthropology has its own and specific research method, ethnographic research, whose success has clearly crossed disciplinary boundaries thanks to qualitative methodology and already decisively influences disciplines such as pedagogy, sociology or social work.

The master's degree in Anthropology and Ethnography has been designed to contribute to generating complex knowledge about the social, political, economic and educational challenges facing Catalan society in the European and globalized context. The global scale of many contemporary phenomena entails the emergence of social and cultural changes that underline the importance of the issue of cultural diversity.

Migration flows or situations of precariousness associated with the economic crisis, for example, are generating new social needs in fields such as education, labour relations, health care or housing, in which diversity often generates phenomena of misunderstanding and rejection that anthropology, more than any other discipline, can contribute to solving. Thanks to the experience in the study of very different realities from ours, anthropology has developed a specific perspective that favors the understanding of sociocultural phenomena.

Organization and methodology

The master's degree is face-to-face. The compulsory and optional classes are developed in the Anthropology Laboratory of the Faculty of Geography and History. The sessions have been designed in a seminar format, and consist of exhibitions by teachers as well as debates and exhibitions by students about their research process. The master will also encourage the organization of conferences by researchers from other universities.

The master's degree is developed in the afternoon shift (16h to 20h). The student's dedication will vary depending on the number of credits he/she enrolls. The minimum number of credits enrolled is 20.

Final work

The Master's Final Project (TFM) consists of an advanced research project in the field of anthropology. The theme of the work is free. However, it will be necessary to obtain the approval of the course coordinator before registering the topic chosen for the TFM. The TFM must be based on ethnographic research, which can be complemented with other research techniques (such as working with archives). Likewise, the TFM must be built on a clear theoretical framework, which allows the student to enter into discussion with the debates of the discipline. The ethnographic and theoretical side of the TFM must be properly articulated.

Each student must choose, with the guidance and approval of the Master's coordinator, a tutor for the TFM. Eventually, the student may choose two tutors.

The TFM must be defended before a tribunal made up of 3 members.

Tutorial action plan

In order to promote the performance of students during the development of the master's degree, a series of personalized tutorials are offered, with the coordinator of the master's degree and also with the rest of the teaching staff. The completion of the Master's Final Project must be tutored by a professor of the department. Eventually, the TFM may be co-directed by another department professor or external researcher.

Specifically, from 5 to 9 September -and, if necessary, throughout the enrolment period-, personalised tutorials are carried out with the master's degree coordinator for both new students and second or third year students. This course start tutorial is mandatory for all students.

Students enrolled in TFM must communicate within the framework of a specific tutorial the name of the tutor chosen to carry out their research. If they do not have one, it is with the support of the master's degree coordinator that a teacher with availability and suitability will be sought to tutor the student's TFM.

During the different pre-registration periods, the master's degree secretary will receive, at the established time, those students interested in having more information about the course. If requested, they may have a personalized tutoring with the master's coordinator.
