Objectives and competences

This master's degree in Cultural Heritage Management and Museology offers professional training to work in museums, heritage institutions, public bodies and cultural companies, as well as providing new professions and profiles related to heritage management.

The master's degree has a fundamentally professional character. The main objective is to offer students theoretical and practical training that allows them to master the necessary tools to practice in the professional field of heritage.

Likewise, it is noteworthy that the master's degree in Cultural Heritage Management and Museology is eminently interdisciplinary both in the organization and in the contents, since university teachers from fourteen different departments participate and is interfacultative, with teachers from seven faculties. In addition, it has the participation of a good number of teachers from mobility programs, both in Spain and abroad, as well as guest external teachers.

Organization and methodology

The Master in Cultural Heritage Management and Museolgia is an official master's degree of 90 credits and with the possibility of doing it with a full-time dedication that would be two years or part-time in three courses. In any case, it is a face-to-face master's degree with theoretical and practical sessions.

The teaching language of the master's degree is Catalan, although there are also classes in Spanish and English. Classes are taught in the classrooms of the Faculty of Geography and History and seminars, talks and visits to institutions are also held.

It is a master's degree that has classes scheduled for the afternoons from 4pm to 8pm from Monday to Friday and some Friday morning optional. The full dedication would imply that the first course was about 16 hours of face-to-face class, more orientation tutorials, practices and autonomous work.

The second year is when internships are carried out in a museum, heritage institution or a company in the sector in Catalonia, Spain or other countries. It is also when the final master's degree project is carried out that it can be either a professional project or a research project focused on subsequent research in a doctorate.

Each course is accepted a maximum of 40 students from different geographical and academic backgrounds in order to guarantee the interdisciplinarity of the master's degree.

For more information we recommend you consult the teaching plans relevant to each subject.

Evaluation

Each teacher sets out the various possible assessment modalities. The evaluation is based on the European system, with continuous evaluation, with the presentation of various works and tests throughout the course (exams, individual and group work, exercises, etc.). Attendance to classes is generally mandatory. Although each teacher may indicate specific formulas, at least 75% of the classes (including tutorials and practical activities) must be attended in each subject.

Final work

Professional Project
The aim of the work is to develop a project for a museum, a heritage institution or a heritage complex. The work must be prepared throughout the course under the direction of a tutor teacher. It will have to try to put into practice the main theoretical or practical elements that will occur in the subjects of the course.  It is, therefore, a work of general nature, although depending on each work it can influence more or less on some more specific topics. It is not a theoretical work or documentation: it will be necessary to take into account the bibliography that is given, but the project will have to be of an applied nature.

The work will be presented and defended at the end of the course before a court, where the practice report will also be presented. The evaluation of the same will determine the evaluation not only of the subject, but will also allow the global evaluation of the Master. You will not be able to enrol and do the work without having enrolled or passed all the subjects.

Research work

The research work consists of the presentation of an initiation to research on a subject related to cultural heritage. The works consist of a theoretical introduction and an empirical part through field research applying qualitative and quantitative techniques.

The work will be presented and defended at the end of the course before a court. The evaluation of the same will determine the evaluation not only of the subject, but will also allow the global evaluation of the Master. You will not be able to enrol and do the work without having enrolled or passed all the subjects.
