Student councils
The Student Council of the Faculty of Education is the body that brings together all student representatives in the various governing bodies (see infographic), as well as class representatives.
Functions:
- To identify, coordinate, communicate, promote and support initiatives, suggestions and proposals, and to report and defend problems or conflicts affecting the student body before the relevant bodies.
- To communicate useful information to the groups they represent, ensuring the optimal development of university life.
- To participate, cooperate and intervene, where appropriate, in the processes of evaluating teaching staff.
- To represent students in the various committees.
The Council usually meets a couple of times a year.
Spaces for Student Representation
UB students can take an active role in the governance of the University by participating in the University’s and the Faculty’s governing bodies, as well as by assuming the role of class delegate or representative (details below).
Student participation in governing bodies entitles students to credit recognition, as set out in the Regulations on the Recognition and Transfer of Credits in Official Bachelor’s Degrees at the University of Barcelona, Article 11, “Institutional activities eligible for academic recognition”.
The Regulations of the Faculty of Education set out the rules that govern the Faculty and its governing bodies, specifying all relevant information about their functioning.
Students also have the right to declare an academic strike in defence of their interests and demands. For the strike not to have internal effects, it must be communicated according to the procedure established in current regulations.
See the summary of functions and rights of student representatives.
-
Class representatives act on behalf of all students in a course group of a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
Election
At the beginning of the academic year, each class autonomously elects its representatives and informs the Student Council by email.
Functions
- To represent the class group and act as a liaison with teaching staff and academic coordinators on any matter affecting all or a significant part of the class.
- To communicate suggestions, proposals and complaints from class members to teaching staff and academic coordinators.
- To encourage class participation in cultural activities, elections, graduation ceremonies, welcome programmes for new students, and other initiatives.
Election process
- Ideally, each class should have two representatives (bachelor’s or master’s).
- Elections take place in class between September and October, in the presence of a professor to ensure transparency.
- After the vote, the elected representatives must inform the Student Council by email; the Council will then notify the head of studies.
- Representation is valid for one academic year, and representatives may stand for re‑election without limitations.
- At any time, the class group may revoke its representatives and elect new ones by submitting a written request to the Office of the Vice-Dean for Students.
This role does not replace the individual right of any student to express their views, either personally or collectively, nor does it substitute institutional channels of representation and participation.
