Economics Olympiad

The Economics Olympiad is an academic competition which aims to stimulate the study of economics and business among young people and to boost the connection between secondary and university studies.

Since the 2013-2014 academic year, the Faculty of Economics and Business has joined the organization of this Olympiad, which is celebrating a new edition this year. The Olympiad is structured in two stages: the local phase and the State phase.

The local phase of the Olympiad at the University of Barcelona took place on 26 March 2025 at 5.00 pm. Organized by the Faculty of Economics and Business (rules), it aims to offer the opportunity for students of the subject Funcionament de l'empresa i disseny de models de negoci (Company functioning and business model design) in the second year of upper secondary school from public or private secondary schools in the province of Barcelona (in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics and Business of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences of Pompeu Fabra University) to participate in the State phase, this year in Alicante (Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences of the University of Alicante) on June 30 and July 1 and 2, 2025.

  • The schedule for the local phase was as follows:

4.00 pm     Institutional welcome by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business (Aula Magna, 690 building).
4.30 pm     Test instructions (Aula Magna, building 690).
5.00 pm     Test starts (room 1011).
6.30 pm     Test ends.
6.35 pm     Awarding of diplomas and snack time.

You can participate in the local phase of the Economics Olympiad of the UB's Faculty of Economics and Business (or UAB or UPF), if you have enrolled during the academic year 2024-2025 in the Business functioning and design of business models course in the second year of upper secondary school.

To do so, you must fill in the registration form, which must be signed by the teacher of the subject and by the head of the school.

Once signed, you must send it scanned to olimpiada.economia@ub.edu.

The deadline for receiving registrations is 19 March 2025.

Concretament: The syllabus that makes up the local test is part of the syllabus corresponding to the programmes of the subject Economics and the first two blocks of the subject Funcionament de l’empresa i disseny de models de negoci (Companies and design of business models) of upper secondary school. Specifically:

However, we remind you that, if you qualify to take part in the State phase, the test for this phase includes all the upper secondary school contents of the subjects related to economics and business.

The local phase exam is structured in three parts: theoretical or practical multiple-choice questions, numerical problem-solving (you can use a calculator) and short questions on a text related to the field of economics and/or business.

You have 1.5 hours to take the test.

The test is coordinated among all the faculties of economics and business of the Catalan public universities.

Models:

The Local Phase Organizing Committee works to ensure the selection of the three candidates who will represent the UB’s Faculty of Economics and Business in the State phase of the Economics Olympiad. This includes the preparations for the test, the preparation of the statement and the correction. After the appointing the candidates, the Local Commission has to facilitate the candidates their travel to the venue where the test will take place.

Secondary education schools that can participate in the local phase at the UB:

  • Barcelona city, districts of: Ciutat Vella, Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
  • Barcelonès Sud: L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.
  • Baix Llobregat

The rest of the centres in Barcelona city (districts of Gràcia, Sant Andreu, Sant Martí, Horta-Guinardó and Nou Barris) and the rest of the centres in the province of Barcelona can participate in the local phase by registering for the local phase of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona or the Pompeu Fabra University.

The prizes for the local UB phase of the Economics Olympiad are:

For the first three winners:

  • Diploma participation in the state phase of the 16th Economics Olympiad (travel and accommodation expenses covered).
  • Percentage of free first-year enrolment for 2025-2026 in any of the degree courses offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business:
 

• 1st prize: 100% free of charge
• 2nd prize: 50% free of charge
• 3rd prize: 25% free of charge

In case the winners of the local UB phase also win the national phase, they can also participate in the International Olympiad with their expenses covered.
A diploma of participation is awarded to all registered students who take the test.
