Social commitment and service learning

UB Service Learning

Service Learning (APS) is an educational proposal that combines learning processes and community service in a single well-articulated project. It is a formula for incorporating social responsibility into university studies and fostering students’ civic commitment to their community.

Where can it be implemented?

Service learning projects can be carried out in different academic spaces. Thus, the hours or credits of student dedication in service learning projects vary depending on whether the project is located in:

  • Subjects (mandatory/optional)
  • Work placements, practicum or clinical practicals
  • Bachelor’s degree final projects (TFG) or master’s degree final projects (TFM)
  • Cross-disciplinary programme (with recognition credits)

In the Faculty of Economics and Business we are developing Service Learning in the following areas:

TFG and TFM

Students can use the TFG or TFM to work on specific needs of social entities. Since the 2014-2015 academic year, TFGs with the Service Learning label have been carried out in the area of ethical finance, promoted by the association FETS (Finançament Ètic i Solidari), or by entities such as Càritas, associations from different fields, etc.

Work placement with Service Learning label

Another form of development of the Service Learning is found in the work placements carried out in social entities, where bachelor’s or master’s degree students cover a series of tasks that the entities would find it difficult to take on if it were not for this collaboration with students from the Faculty.

Family and Social Economy Clinic

Created during the 2021-2022 academic year under the Faculty of Law’s Right to Law programme, this “legal and economic practice” works to improve the rights of disadvantaged groups by promoting the training of students.

Collaboration with the Sharing Ideas project

The Faculty participates in the Teaching Improvement and Innovation Programme (PMID) called Sharing Ideas. The University goes to school, developed by the Learning Service Group (UB). In this project, university students present lectures or workshops in schools and institutes in Barcelona. This participation usually revolves around a subject because some content is being worked on.
