Objectives and competences

This course examines the theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of sustainable food systems, with an emphasis on the social, political, economic and environmental contexts that shape and are shaped by those aspects in order to understand what constitutes a sustainable food system. Practical aspects of the course include a visit/interview with food companies and agri-food businesses, a visit to a school canteen and an interactive classroom activity in which students measure their carbon footprint, among other activities. It is especially suitable for people in the environmental, agricultural studies and education fields.

Objectives

- Describe key concepts related to sustainable food systems.
- To be able to apply systems thinking tools to the analysis of food systems.
- Analyse the results of food systems research and policies for evidence-based assessments and ethical decision-making.
- To be able to communicate clearly and effectively in relation to food systems through written and oral presentations in a professional environment with a diverse audience.
- To engage in respectful dialogue, collaborative teamwork and problem solving with people with a wide variety views and backgrounds.

Recommended applicant profile

- Students from educational institutions in the United States with an international agreement with specialized entities.
- Exceptionally, vacancies can be filled with national and international university students who accredit a B2 level of English at least

Access requirements and conditions

The course is also open to students with no prior university education, who will acquire the same knowledge and skills and receive a specific qualification for their learner group. Information on the access requirements and other conditions can be obtained from the course directors.
