Objectives and competences

Infection in orthopedic surgery and traumatology is the most severe, feared complication relating to this procedure, particularly in arthroplasty. Prosthetic infection is not just a medical problem, but also has a considerable social and economic impact for healthcare management. In the United States, the average cost of a prosthetic infection has been estimated to be $54,000. In this context, the objective of this course is to update knowledge about the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of osteoarticular infection from both a medical and surgical point of view.
