Objectives and competences

It is multidisciplinary in nature. It may be of interest to biologists, managers, conservationists, environmental educators and safari guides. It is focused on the management and conservation of large mammals in natural parks and reserves, taking as an example the existing problem in Kenya, where three conservation areas are visited (Ol Pejeta, Crater Lake and Kileleoni Mara, within the Maasai-Mara ecosystem). It is comprised of several online seminars on the identification of wildlife, the savannah ecosystem, conservation strategies, monitoring methods (cybertracker, camera traps, identification of tracks, etc).

Objectives

- To gain an overview of the main threats faced by large African mammals and the continent?s nature in general.
- To train as a future professional in the area of conservation biotechnology. Learn the field techniques and tools that are most commonly used in the study and conservation of wildlife, with a focus on large mammals.
- To train in the recognition, biology, ecology and conservation problems of large mammals in Africa.

Recommended applicant profile

- Graduates in Biology, Environmental Science or Marine Sciences.
- Degree holders in tourism.
- Graduates in Psychology.
- Graduates in Geography.
- Graduates in Social and Cultural Anthropology.
- Primary education teachers.
- Students who have completed at least 90% of their bachelor's degree studies.

It is aimed at graduates with professional projection in the field of the natural environment, both in terms of knowledge of biodiversity and its problems in conservation, as well as in terms of interest in behavioural sciences, anthropology, geography and, in general, the social sciences. It is also aimed at professionals in the ecotourism sector, nature guides or safaris, managers of protected areas, park rangers, cartographers and environmental educators.

Access requirements and conditions

The course is also open to students with no prior university education, who will acquire the same knowledge and skills and receive a specific qualification for their learner group. Information on the access requirements and other conditions can be obtained from the course directors.
