Objectives and competences

This course allows students to acquire knowledge about the main causes of epilepsy in children, adolescents and adults; are able to carry out the indication and interpretation of the semiology of seizures, EEGs and neuroimaging techniques for the diagnosis of epilepsies; Know how to classify crises and epilepsies; know how to do pre-surgical assessment, interpretation of prolonged video-EEG monitoring, neuropsychological assessment and neuroimaging and nuclear medicine tests; are able to discuss cases in multidisciplinary sessions, and know how to apply resective surgery techniques and obtain results by etiology.

Objectives

- Gain knowledge to diagnose epilepsy in children, adolescents and adults.
- Gain knowledge of the main causes of epilepsies.
- To know how to interpret the symptoms of a fit, the EEG and neuroimaging techniques.
- Know how to classify crises and epilepsies.
- Learn the treatment options for epilepsies.
- To be able to assess patients with epilepsy and their families and provide information about the causes, treatments, prognoses, implications and precautions at different points in their lives.
- Gain knowledge of drug treatment of epilepsies in children, adolescents and adults.
- Learn the mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anti-epileptic drugs.
- Gain knowledge of the interactions, adverse effects and choice of anti-epileptic drug depending on the type of epilepsy or epileptic syndrome and the characteristics of the patient, dietary treatments and discontinuation of treatment with anti-epileptic drugs.
- To gain knowledge of epilepsies that are candidates for surgical treatment.
- To learn how to interpret the indications of pre-surgical assessment, prolonged video-EEG monitoring, neuropsychological assessment and neuroimaging or nuclear medicine tests.
- Learn the available techniques.
- To know how to interpret the results of surgery by etiology.
- Be able to follow-up the patient and manage drugs after surgery and palliative surgery.
- To know how to manage emergencies in situations of epilepsy, including handling of the child, adolescent and adult who is having an epileptic fit outside of the hospital, and know how to diagnose and treat convulsive and non-convulsive epileptic status.
- Learn the comorbidities of epilepsies, including mood and emotional regulation disorders and developmental and learning disorders.
