Objectives and competences

Perhaps the most important challenge today is climate change. There is more and more pressure in the construction sector, in which public-private institutions demand buildings with more natural and ecological materials, and solutions are optimized for passive elements and with more efficient energy systems, attending to the process throughout its life cycle. In addition, the demand for comfort for the occupants increases, so the spaces must be equipped with specific monitoring and regulation systems to offer a global intelligent system.

Objectives and competences

Objectives

General objective:
- To gain the theoretical and practical foundations required to achieve sustainable, energy-efficient architecture, to meet current regulatory requirements in the renovation of buildings and new builds.

Specific objectives:
- To learn and handle strategies and techniques of passive (orientation, thermal bridges, natural lighting, etc.) and active (heating and ACS, air conditioning, artificial lighting, etc.) design, to improve the building's energy performance.
- To gain knowledge and tools to draw up a building life cycle analysis (databases of low emission materials, environmental product declaration [EPD], cost-benefit analysis, interpret and analyse the general principles of a LCA and its tools).
- To understand the concepts and principles of Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) and Nearly Net Zero Energy Buildings (NNZEB).
- To learn and apply the main tools of international energy certification (LEED, BREEAM, Passivhaus).
- To learn key aspects in the programming of any energy modelling system on the market.
- To become familiar with the range of programmes currently available in the market.
- To learn to create a virtual model and simulation of quality, taking advantage of each of the programs studied in this course.
- To learn fundamental aspects of simulation and BIM.
- Be able to model buildings and analyse the results.
- To learn about various active heating systems that could be modelled by a simulator.
- To learn about advanced modelling, natural ventilation, BIM and energy efficiency.
- To learn to perform energy modelling and simulation processes, analyse the results and propose measures to improve energy efficiency and publish final reports.
- To be able to prepare the BIM model to carry out simulations and gain credit for LEED environmental certification.
