Objectives and competences

From a human rights perspective, and based on the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, this course complements the interdisciplinary training provided by the postgraduate course People with Disabilities, Social Rights and the Culture of Capacity Building to achieve a higher level of specialization and address the emergence of new social needs. This training deepens, strengthens and sharpens a critical, ethical and practical vision in the area of disability.

Objectives and competences

Objectives

General objective:
- To deepen, strengthen and sharpen a critical, ethical and practical vision in the area of disability.

Critical perspective:
- To gain a solid understanding of the historical and conceptual evolution of the different paradigms and their models in order to be better informed, prepared and aware of human rights and people with disabilities.
- To become equipped with the tools needed to analyse, diagnose and understand the social situation of people with disabilities and to gain a thorough understanding of the new challenges that have arisen in the field.

Ethical perspective:
-To foster and disseminate the paradigm of personal autonomy based on the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
- To promote the value of inclusive culture for the improvement of the quality of life of humanity and the development of the ethics of good living, recognizing the role that people with disabilities can represent as a key resource in this process.

Practical perspective:
- To acquire an understanding of the current situation of persons with disabilities and, in particular, that of women and girls with disabilities through the double prism of gender and disability.
- To acquire the ability to develop a proactive role and represent a constructive force to confront practical situations of discrimination, contributing to improving the quality of life of all stakeholders.

Applicant profile and access requirements

Recommended applicant profile

Graduates in the social sciences: Social Work, Social Education, Psychology, Sociology, Education and other fields related to disability.

Access for students not in possession of a university degree: students who do not hold a university degree may be admitted to this course, and will receive a university extension certificate on completion. In this case, candidates must demonstrate previous experience in the sector and attach their curriculum vitae and the academic transcript of the last training course they completed as well as a statement of interest describing why they would like to participate in the course.

Access requirements and conditions

The course is also open to students with no prior university education, who will acquire the same knowledge and skills and receive a specific qualification for their learner group. Information on the access requirements and other conditions can be obtained from the course directors.
