Objectives and competences

The course provides comprehensive and rigorous training in the use of phylogenetic and coalescence-based methods to infer mechanisms and evolutionary history using high-throughput sequencing data. The course will cover the main methods of phylogenetic inference, molecular dating, species delimitation and coalescence theory-based methodologies to infer demographic history and determine the impact of natural selection. Special emphasis will be placed on hands-on experience, use of state-of-the-art software, and case studies of applications of phylogenetic methods.

Objectives and competences

Objectives

- Gain experience in the theory and practice of phylogenomic inference and population genomic analyses and their application to infer species trees, estimate divergence times, identify species boundaries, and reconstruct population histories; and infer gene flux, population mixing and introgression, and identify genomic regions under selection.
- To understand the theoretical basis, assumptions and limitations of analytical methods for phylogenomics and population genomics.
- Become capable of manipulating and managing high-throughput sequencing data, and of applying selected specialized computer and bioinformatics tools.
