Objectives and competences

This master's degree offers the opportunity to complete excellent training in the field of translational medicine through theoretical and practical courses.

  • Theoretical courses: this degree provides comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of basic, clinical and therapeutic principles associated with major human diseases, examined with a cross-disciplinary approach and a translational perspective.
  • Research training (master's degree thesis): the course provides hands-on comprehensive access to the knowledge and skills necessary to develop research projects related to translational medicine. This master's degree offers the opportunity to work on your master's thesis in leading laboratories in different biomedical areas within top research institutions in Barcelona such as the University of Barcelona, IDIBAPS, Hospital Clínic, IRB, and IDIBELL.

Is this the right master's programme for you?

  • Is your main goal to understand the transition from discovery to applicability in the field of human disease treatment?
  • Are you interested in understanding the cause of human diseases?
  • Are you thrilled by the idea of developing new strategies to improve the wellbeing of patients?
  • Would you like to dedicate your career to translational research, that is, to the application of knowledge from bench to bedside?

If your answer to these questions is yes, then this master's degree is what you are looking for!

Objectives and competences

Objectives

The main objective of this MSc is to train future researchers in translational medicine by providing the basis for a comprehensive understanding of new cutting-edge technologies and discoveries in biological sciences and molecular medicine.

This master's degree provides in-depth and complementary training to graduates in medicine, biomedicine, pharmacy, biology, biotechnology and other health-related fields, by providing students with skills in applied research areas such as the study of pathological mechanisms underlying human diseases and the development of therapeutic strategies, and insight into legal issues related to translational research.

Competences

On completing the master's degree, students are expected to have acquired the adequate scientific training that allows them to become independent researchers with critical thinking abilities to address specific scientific questions. These cross-disciplinary skills and competences include:

  • Understanding of how to translate research discoveries to the clinical setting.
  • Understanding of the basic, clinical and therapeutic principles of different pathologies.
  • Knowledge of advances in biomedical research and the necessary tools to access ongoing training.
  • Ability to properly formulate hypotheses and research objectives.
  • Ability to design potentially applicable research projects.
  • Ability to interact with professionals in other medical fields in order to design and implement novel strategies in the handling of patients.
  • Capacity to design research studies on new predictive, prognostic, diagnostic or pharmacodynamics biomarkers.
  • Ability to disseminate research results (scientific communications, audiovisual tools, social networking and scientific databases).
  • Capacity to identify problems of public health, to design epidemiological studies and to interpret the results.
  • Understanding of the bioethical and legal principles of research in the field of translational medicine.

Access requirements and conditions

General requirements
In accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, students wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Official Spanish university degree.

  • A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.

  • A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.

Specific requirements

The entry criteria is based on the evaluation of the following documentation to be provided by each applicant:

  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Academic transcript
  • All candidates must hold a minimum level of English language (level B2 CEFR, First Certificate or equivalent) ' Recommendation letters (optional)

The required documentation should be sent via email to traslacional@ub.edu. All applications will be evaluated by the master's degree Coordinating Committee. During this process, additional supporting documents, such as language level certificates, may be requested. The master's degree Secretary's Office will notify the admission decision within a week, after which the selected students are required to complete the online pre-enrolment form (for more details see pre-enrolment/enrolment section).

Placements

Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.

Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 750 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
