Objectives and competences

The master's degree programme allows students to complete the basic academic education received during undergraduate study and prepares them for a career in research or in a professional context, to reflect the increasing demand for graduates with advanced mathematical skills in a wide variety of emerging sectors.

The master's degree in Advanced Mathematics is intended for graduates in mathematics or similar disciplines who wish to acquire advanced training in the subject.

The master's degree provides professional specialization and prepares students in the areas of university teaching and research, governance, industry, banking or financial and insurance companies, consultancy, information and communication technologies and other related areas.

Objectives and competences

Objectives

The primary objective of the master's degree in Advanced Mathematics is to provide specialized, high-quality education in different areas of knowledge in mathematics and its applications. The master's degree program has also been designed to provide students with the tools they will need to perform high-level scientific or professional tasks, such as expertise in and the application of advanced computing methods, the capacity to work in multidisciplinary environments and the capacity to transmit advanced mathematical knowledge, among others.

Competences

The general competences that participants will acquire consist of the ability to apply the knowledge and abilities acquired over the course of the program, the capacity to effectively manage time and available resources, the capacity to access specialized bibliographic data bases using new technologies, the ability to gather information required to approach and synthesize a problem, and the capacity to work in a team.
The specific competences that participants will acquire include the ability to understand the concepts and rigorous demonstrations of the fundamental theorems of general areas of mathematics and some specific areas of mathematics, the capacity to apply the results and techniques learned to solve complex problems in some areas of mathematics, in academic or professional contexts, the capacity to choose and use the most suitable computer tools to approach math-related problems, and the capacity to design, develop and implement efficient computer programs to approach problems related to mathematics.

Access and admission

Applicant profile and access requirements

Recommended applicant profile

Ideally, applicants to this master's degree should hold a bachelor's degree in mathematics or an equivalent qualification, as well as possessing a strong academic record and a particular interest in pursuing a career in university research or affiliated to a research centre, or a career in business or public administration, in sectors that require specialists with a high level of training in mathematics (finance, biomedicine, information and communication technologies, etc.). At the master's degree level, we do not think it necessary to distinguish between these two possible career paths, as the lines that divide them are becoming increasingly blurred and will only continue to do so in the future.

Since the degree is taught in English, applicants should also possess a sufficient level of comprehension to be able to follow the course in this language.

Access requirements and conditions

General requirements
In accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, students wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Official Spanish university degree.

  • A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.

  • A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.

Specific requirements
This course is open to all those in possession of a bachelor's degree in mathematics or an equivalent official degree qualification.
Applicants with a degree in physics, engineering, economics or other similar disciplines, or an officially recognized equivalent degree, granted by an EHEA university, or students with a bachelor's degree in mathematics or any of the other abovementioned disciplines, or with an equivalent degree, granted by a university not belonging to the EHEA may be admitted with approval from the Coordination Committee. The committee will evaluate the students' potential to assimilate the content of the master's program based on their previous studies and will decide, if deemed necessary, to require these students to take bridging courses up to a maximum of 30 credits within the subjects offered in the bachelor's degree in Mathematics as taught by the UB's Faculty of Mathematics.

Placements

Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.

Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
