The master's degree in Digital Content Management meets the growing need for consultancies and companies dedicated to designing web architecture, to conduct user experience studies (UX), to manage the presence of brands in social networks (community manager), to improve web positioning in search engines (SEO) or to plan online marketing campaigns.

Digital content management is an emerging professional area worldwide. This is clearly visible in the growing number of consultants and companies dedicated to web architecture, studies of usability and accessibility, the management of web portals, the management of brands in social networks (community managers), search engine optimization, and the planning of online marketing campaigns. Jobs are also increasing in intranet management, online document management and for webmasters of public websites. The phenomenon can be seen in medium-sized and large companies, research centres and public administrations.

Libraries, archives and museums also need staff who can plan and manage digitization projects, contract digital documents, organize them and offer them to users through specific applications, and then maintain them over the long term.

This master's degree provides students with knowledge related to document management, software and interface design. The master's degree also addresses teamwork with other professionals and gives students the capacity to analyse a specific problem or assignment and produce a solution that involves the design and implementation of a specific project.

Objectives

  • To gain knowledge, abilities and attitudes that provide a theoretical and practical basis for the development and application of original projects.
  • To gain skills for problem solving in new or relatively unknown environments within multidisciplinary contexts, related to the management of digital contents.
  • To learn to take complex decisions requiring reflection on the implicit social and ethical responsibilities of a project.
  • To learn to manage the successive phases of the life cycle of a project.

Competences

When finishing the master's degree, students must be able to:
  • Know the basics and apply the techniques of conceptualization and modelling of websites and digital applications based on the purpose, objectives and goals of an organization, business or project.
  • Analyse the environment and the competence to develop user-oriented digital services and products.
  • Know and apply the methodological principles of digital marketing, especially for the improvement of audiences and the conversion of websites and digital applications.
  • Apply analytics metrics for use and behaviour of website users.
  • Use techniques to diagnose the user experience and the usability of websites and digital applications.
  • Understand and use software applications required for the creation and development of digital products and services.
  • Plan and organize in multidisciplinary teams the processes of diagnosis, design and promotion of websites and digital applications.

The master's degree is intended primarily for graduates in the areas of Information and Documentation, Communication, Business, and Information and Communication Technology ('pre-EHEA degree' and 'pre-EHEA diploma' refer, respectively, to the Spanish licenciatura and diplomatura):

The master's degree is also suitable for any university graduate who wishes to specialize in the areas described in and covered by the course curriculum, thanks to the interdisciplinary nature of the field. Digital content managers are professionals with highly diverse training backgrounds who are capable of contributing complementary visions, skills and knowledge to a single client project.'

Access requirements and conditions

General requirements
In accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/29 October 2007, students must hold one of the following qualifications to access university master's degree courses:
  • An official Spanish degree.
  • A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.
  • A qualification from outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, the qualification should be recognized as equivalent to an official Spanish degree. If it is not recognized, the University of Barcelona shall verify that it corresponds to a level of education that is equivalent to official Spanish degrees and that it authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.


Specific requirements
  • Prospective students must be able to demonstrate a level of Spanish language proficiency at or equivalent to C2 and will be expected to pass an oral and written test prior to admission.
  • Depending on their previous knowledge of html website design, CSS website layout the general mechanisms of web operation (client-server architecture, HTTP protocol, etc.), prospective students will be required to enroll in or or two bridging subjects that must be passed during the first semester of the master's degree: Fundamental Aspects of Web Editing (2.5 credits) and Fundamental Aspects of Information and Communication Technologies on the Internet (2.5 credits).

  • Second period: 8 May - 3 September of 2024.
    Notification of decisions: 9 September of 2024.

Notes:

  • Pre-enrolment fee: A pre-enrolment fee of 30,21 euros is charged. Students who apply to more than one master's degree must pay the fee for each pre-enrolment request. Pre-enrolment requests cannot be processed until this fee has been paid.Fees will only be refunded if the master's degree in question is suspended.
  • Reserved places: A maximum of 5% of the new places of the master's degree are reserved for students who meet the general and specific access requirements and accredit the recognition of a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%.

Selection criteria

Prospective students will be selected against the following criteria, weighted as shown:

  • Weighted criteria:
  1. Academic transcript: 50%.
  2. Curriculum vitae:
    1. Professional experience in information units and services: 20%, scored from 1 to 10.
    2. Professional experience in website/social network management: 20%, scored from 1 to 10.
    3. Professional experience in computer systems management: 10%, scored from 1 to 10.
  • Additional criteria:
  1. Previous studies: 2 points will be added to the weighted score if the student holds one of the degrees stated in the Recommended applicant profile and admission requirements.
  2. English: 1 point will be added if the student can provide evidence of English language proficiency at or equivalent to level B1 or higher.

 

Notification

The Coordination Committee of the master's degree analyses the applications and documentation submitted and makes public the list of admitted candidates. On admission, the Academic Committee will notify each successful candidate of the bridging courses they will need to complete, if any.

Enrolment

As a general rule, for this master's degree, you will be required to enrol offline. Remember that you can lose your place if you do not enrol on the day you have been assigned

Placements

Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.



Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 750 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
