Objectives and competences

Legal professionals carry out a fundamental task in the rule of law, providing advice to citizens regarding the enforcement of the law, promoting extra-judicial resolution of conflicts, and, if necessary, defending and representing the rights and interests of their clients in court. In this way, they ensure the proper functioning of society and act in the service of public entities, companies and individuals.

In this context, access to the legal profession as a lawyer or solicitor requires a process of professional training based on three fundamental pillars: specialized learning, a mandatory internship period, and a professional aptitude test. Therefore, the new university master’s degree in Legal Practice and Representation is conceived as the professional training course that allows students to take the respective access examination for the professions of lawyer and solicitor.

Similarly, considering the high demand for studies in law, the university master’s degree in Legal Practice and Representation offered by the Faculty of Law at the University of Barcelona allows graduates in law to continue their specialized training. The master’s degree is not only linked to our social responsibility as a public university but also to the need for a comprehensive and coherent postgraduate offering in the field of legal studies, aimed at specialization and the provision of specific professional training.

Placements

Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.

Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 750 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.

What can you work on ?

In accordance with Law 34/2006, of October 30, on access to legal practice and representation, as well as its implementing regulation approved by Royal Decree 64/2023, of February 8, individuals who wish to practise as lawyers or court solicitors must obtain the corresponding professional qualification. This is obtained by successfully completing the specialized training course in the necessary competencies for legal practice and representation, as well as passing the final evaluation test that certifies the attainment of the respective professional competence.

In this context, the master's degree in Legal Practice and Representation constitutes specialized training as required by the current legislation. Students who successfully complete the programme will be eligible to sit the Spanish Ministry of Justice examination to qualify for the professions of lawyer and solicitor. The attainment of this qualification, following completion of the specialized training and the professional aptitude examination, entitles legal practitioners to register with the pertinent college of lawyers or solicitors, according to their choice of activity.

Qualified individuals who pass the professional access examination are entitled to practise as lawyers or solicitors, either individually, collectively, or by joining multidisciplinary teams. They should approach their work with a reflective and proactive attitude towards the defence of their clients' interests, demonstrating commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, the gender perspective and social justice.

The dual theoretical and practical nature of the training offered in the field of legal practice and representation ensures that students obtain the necessary skills to work in various areas. Specifically, it enables qualified graduates to engage in the planning and implementation of appropriate procedural strategies before the courts or to carry out the functions related to client representation in court. It also prepares them for providing legal advice in the public and private sectors, as well as for resolving conflicts through ADR methods.
