Objectives and competences

We provide the knowledge, skills and tools that enable students to acquire the competences defined for advanced practice nursing. These competences provide the framework for national and international practice models that have had a positive impact on health outcomes and the healthcare system as a whole. They encompass the design, implementation and evaluation of research projects; evidence-based practice; care quality enhancement; critical thought and analysis; capacity to take and manage complex ethical decisions; education and health promotion; clinical leadership, and collaborative inter-professional practice. The master's degree is taught by a team with a high level of professional and research expertise. Successful students can continue to the associated doctoral programme.

The MUIPCA syllabus is divided into three main blocks: advanced practice, research, and a choice of specializations. For the third block, a total of six specializations are offered, four of which are biennial (admitting new students every two academic years). The specializations are:

  • Chronicity (annual)
  • Chronic and Complex Wounds (annual)
  • Cancer (biennial, enrolment in odd-numbered years)
  • Neurology (biennial, enrolment in odd-numbered years)
  • Cardiology (biennial, enrolment in even-numbered years)
  • Pain (biennial, enrolment in even-numbered years)
