Objectives and competences
Objectives
The objective of the master's degree is to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of materials based on chemical principles. Students will develop a foundation that enables them to develop and use the concepts of applied chemistry in flexible and original ways.
Competences
General competences
- Ability to work through practical examples and obtain results.
- Capacity to apply the specific experimental techniques of applied materials chemistry.
- Capacity to consult the scientific literature, databases, patents and current legislation.
- Ability to write scientific reports and papers and prepare presentations of scientific material.
- Ability to plan and design a research project.
Specific competences
- Understanding of methods for the synthesis and characterization of different types of materials.
- Ability to identify the correlation between the structure, composition and properties of materials.
- Knowledge of the applications of different materials in different areas of industry.
- Ability to design specific materials for energy and environmental applications.
- Capacity to apply instrumental techniques for the study and characterization of materials.
- Capacity to conduct experimental research independently.
- Ability to conduct chemical laboratory work in compliance with regulations on safety, hygiene and waste management.
- Ability to conduct laboratory work in compliance with quality management criteria.

Access and admission
Applicant profile and access requirements
Recommended applicant profile
Applicants should be interested in gaining an in-depth knowledge of chemistry and materials with the aim of pursuing a career in research, innovation and development.
To ensure success in this master's degree, applicants should have a strong level of chemistry, physics and mathematics and a good working knowledge of English, at least level B1. Although English is not the language of instruction for the subjects, information in English (e.g., bibliography) will be used extensively. Applicants will also need user-level software skills.
The master's degree is also open to professionals in the private sector who wish to deepen their knowledge in specific fields or of specific techniques.
Access requirements and conditions
General requirementsStudents wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:
- Official Spanish university degree.
- A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.
- A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.
Specific requirements
Graduates in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Physics, Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering have direct access. For students with other national or foreign qualifications, the Coordination Committee will evaluate their profiles on the basis of their curricular pathways.
Besides, sufficient knowledge of at least two of the languages of instruction is required, one of which must be English with a minimum level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Placements
Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.
Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record. There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 750 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.

Career opportunities
What can you work on ?
The master's degree is aimed at students who wish to further their understanding of chemistry and materials in order to specialize in research, innovation and development. Acquired training improves the career opportunities for students in research centres or private companies in the industrial (metalurgy, petrochemistry, detergents, plastics, painting, ceramics, etc), environmental (energy, sustainability, etc) or physiological (biomaterials, therapeutics, agri-food, cosmetics, pharmacy, etc.) sectors. It also provides excellent training to pursue doctoral studies.Access to the labour market
