Objectives and competences
Objectives
- analyse and formulate solutions to environmental problems;
- adopt the most appropriate solutions through modern and eco-efficient management practices;
- conceive and design facilities and services;
- ensure that such facilities and services operate at optimum efficiency.
One of the principal objectives of this master's degree is provide a detailed practical understanding of environmental technology. However, given the increasing environmental demands and the wealth of technological challenges our society is witnessing, research and development of new tools for environmental evaluation, minimization, management and, above all, treatment has become an equally important objective.
Therefore, this master's degree has a strong orientation towards research, which will enable graduates to conduct applied research in the field of environmental engineering from a global perspective, including all aspects of evaluation, minimization, management, optimization, process efficiency and treatment technologies for all types of effluents and wastes which will prevent or alleviate the effects of human activities on the environment.

- Capacity to work as part of a group and in multidisciplinary and international teams.
- Capacity to formulate creative solutions to problems involving consideration of social or ethical responsibility.
- Adaptability, initiative, capacity for independent learning, the ability to manage frustration, and emotional intelligence.
Specific competences
- Understanding of the Best Available Technologies (BAT) compatible with use in environmental contexts.
- Understanding of and ability to apply environmental assessment and management methodologies.
- Ability to identify, enunciate, analyse and solve the most common environmental problems related to liquid effluents, gaseous effluents, solid waste and contaminated soils.
- Ability to propose and select the most appropriate technologies for the tasks at hand.
- Capacity to design facilities and services for solid, liquid and gaseous waste treatment plants and ensure maximum operating efficiency.
- Ability to interpret and correlate the evolution of the operational variables of treatment processes.
- Capacity to carry out R&D+i projects in the sphere of environmental engineering, including designing and conducting experiments, analysing results and drawing conclusions.

Access and admission
Applicant profile and access requirements
Recommended applicant profile
The master's degree in Environmental Engineering is intended for graduates with scientific or technical backgrounds who are interested in pursuing a career related to innovation and the development and application of technologies for the diagnosis and resolution of environmental problems.During their previous scientific or technical education, graduates who wish to enrol in the master's degree in Environmental Engineering must have acquired skills in mathematics, physics and chemistry at a level equivalent to the compulsory content of EHEA bachelor's degree in engineering and architecture, and must have completed at least one subject on the basics of chemical engineering. Moreover, applicants must have basic knowledge of English in order to acquire the competences that make up the master's degree program.
Access requirements and conditions
General requirementsIn accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, students wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:
- Official Spanish university degree.
- A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.
- A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.
Specific requirements
Applicants wishing to enrol in the master's degree in Environmental Engineering must hold a degree from a Spanish or foreign university in chemical engineering, environmental sciences, chemistry, industrial engineering or other similar fields of study and meet the requirements in mathematics, physics, chemistry and chemical engineering indicated in the applicant profile, which will enable students to make the most of the master's program.
Students should also have a sufficient knowledge of English, at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
These specific requirements are essential for admission to the master's degree, since no bridging courses are offered.
Pre-enrolment
Calendar
First period: 18 March - 19 July 2023.Second period: 26 August - 15 September.
Notes:
- Pre-enrolment fee: A pre-enrolment fee of 30,21 euros is charged. Students who apply to more than one master's degree must pay the fee for each pre-enrolment request. Pre-enrolment requests cannot be processed until this fee has been paid.Fees will only be refunded if the master's degree in question is suspended.
- Reserved places: A maximum of 5% of the new places of the master's degree are reserved for students who meet the general and specific access requirements and accredit the recognition of a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%.

Placements
Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.
Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record. There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 750 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
