Carry out a research visit abroad
A range of international options
We outline the different possibilities for a research visit at another institution.
If you are writing your thesis at the UB and want to carry out a research visit at a foreign institution or research centre, there are several options open to you. The research visit is often essential for completing a particular part of the research plan. Even when this is not the case, it will be an enriching experience and invaluable for the preparation of your thesis.

Some predoctoral contracts include funding for the research visit. But if you do not have a predoctoral contract, other options are available.
More information is available here.
In this case, the visit must be approved by the Academic Committee of the doctoral programme and must last a minimum of three months. Consult the conditions for obtaining the international doctoral certification.
This is an entirely different option and entails preparing the thesis at the UB and another university simultaneously. You will have a supervisor at each university and a specific agreement will be established between the universities, detailing where the thesis must be presented, the duration of the studies and the enrolment conditions.
The international doctoral certification is attached to the doctoral degree, provided that the following conditions are met: you must spend a minimum of three months outside of Spain at a higher education institution or a prestigious research centre. For more information, consult the page Joint supervision.
The different predoctoral programmes (FI, FI-SDUR, FPU, FPI, PRE-DOCS UB) offer financial support for foreign research visits. If you have one of these contracts, check the application deadlines and the type of financial support at: beca.predoctoral@ub.edu.
The following mobility grants are offered to all UB doctoral students.
The UB's Agustí Pedro i Pons University Foundation offers a mobility support programme every year.
Visits must be carried out at universities or research centres outside Catalonia and, preferably, outside Spain, to complete postgraduate studies or research projects or to take master's degree programmes in artistic disciplines, music, composition or singing. A range of grants and funding options are available depending on the specific programme.

The purpose of these grants is to support placements at centres in Spain or abroad that are not in the locality of the recipient's home faculty and require a temporary change of residence.
The activities carried out during the placement are intended to optimize the development of the recipient's research plan during their work in research laboratories, consulting bibliographic sources, learning new instrumental techniques, participating in summer schools or doing other field work.
