The Department

The origins of the Department of Art History lie in the Art History Seminar promoted by Dr. Bosch i Gimpera during the Spanish Civil War at the former Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. However, the subjects of Art History and Art Theory had already been present at the University of Barcelona since 1857, in the course started by José de Manjarés at the Provincial School of Fine Arts, the precursor of the Faculty of Fine Arts. The Department is composed of faculty members thematically assigned to one of the two fields of knowledge that make it up, which are proportionally reflected in the study plans: a majority area, Art History, and a smaller but still important one, Music.

The Department of Art History is composed of professors who are thematically assigned to one of the two fields of knowledge that make it up, which are proportionally reflected in the study plans: a majority area, Art History, and a smaller but important one, Music. At the same time, faculty members and research fellows may also be administratively affiliated with two faculties: Geography and History, and Fine Arts, regardless of where the teaching takes place. In Fine Arts, some of the faculty participate in the three undergraduate programs of this faculty: Fine Arts, Design, and Conservation-Restoration.

Research

The department has several consolidated research groups as well as various research projects funded both within and outside these groups, in addition to more individualized research by certain individuals. This research aims at the constant improvement of teaching and the universal advancement of studies in the theory and history of art in all its meanings. It is also fundamentally aimed at collaborating with social and cultural agents in the preservation, study, dissemination, and respect of historical-artistic and cultural heritage.
