The department's teaching and research activity covers a wide range of topics related to the criminal system and international law. It studies the theory of crime, penalties and security measures, as well as crimes in particular, economic criminal law, prison law, juvenile law, police law, immigration law and administrative sanctioning law. Criminal policies, crime prevention and the effectiveness of sanctions are also analyzed from a criminological perspective. In parallel, work is carried out on the interrelationship between international peace and security, international humanitarian law and the protection of human rights. The area also delves into the legal effects of European integration, as well as the regulatory challenges arising from modern biotechnology and global environmental problems.

Department
The current Department of Criminal Law and Criminology and Public International Law and International Relations is the result of the merger process of the previous departments of Criminal Law and Criminology, on the one hand, and Public International Law and International Relations on the other. The previous Department of Criminal Law had just added Criminology to its name when the function and reorganization of Departments at the University of Barcelona was launched in the 2106-2117 academic year. It was also not long ago that the Department of Public International Law had separated, amicably, from the other side with which it had historically shared academic future, Private International Law.

Teaching

The members of the department teach in the degrees in Law, Criminology, Political Science, Public Management, Labor Relations, Security and ADE, as well as in the official masters in Criminology, Law, Internationalization, Economics and Energy Sustainability, and in the own masters in Criminal Law and International Studies. Currently, the permanent members of Criminal Law and Criminology are part of the Criminal Law and Criminal Policy Research Group. In addition, other members participate in projects funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness on freedom of expression and criminal responsibility in the democratic state.

Members of the department participate in high-impact global research groups and projects and many are part of the TransJus Research Institute and the Observatory of the Penal System and Human Rights.
