The Department of Biology, Health and Environment of the University of Barcelona was established in January 2016. It is structured into five sections: Botany, Plant Physiology, Microbiology, Parasitology and Environmental Health and Edaphology, each of which focuses its teaching and research activity on the areas of knowledge that are within its competence.

The composition of the teaching team, as well as the research groups that form it, demonstrate the multidisciplinary nature of the department.

A large part of the Department's teaching and research staff is linked to research institutes such as the Biodiversity Research Institute (IRBio) and the Water Research Institute (IdRA).

Research at the Department of Biology, Health and Environment, both fundamental and applied, is structured into a set of fully cross‑disciplinary fields. This diversity makes it possible to study organisms from multiple perspectives, ranging from physiology to the species level, as well as to examine the environmental matrices with which living organisms interact.
