Groups

IPERC unites researchers from three research groups of the University of Barcelona who share the goal of producing excellent and relevant research on political institutions and their relationship with economic change and development. Each group specializes in one of the following research lines:
Researchers in this line are part of the Institutions and Political Economy Research Group (IPERG), directed by Prof. Carles Boix. The main goal of IPERG is to foster the study of the role of institutions (from political regimes to parties and electoral norms) on the emergence of political order and stability, the political representation of individual and social interests, and economic development and redistribution.

Researchers in this line are part of the Economic History and Development Research Group, directed by Prof. Alfonso Herranz-Loncán. The main objective of the group is to contribute to a better understanding of the economic change of societies in the long run, with specific attention to the long-term evolution of state capacity, public policies, standards of living, spatial inequalities and the relationship between natural resources and development, among others.

Researchers in this line are part of the Research Programme in Political Economy of the Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB), directed by Prof. Andreu Arenas and Matteo Gamalerio. It studies the relationship between political and economic systems, with specific attention to the determinants of voting behaviour and policy-making decisions; institutions’ role in shaping economic policy and economic and political outcomes; the political economy of immigration, technological change, trade shocks and climate change; the effects of fiscal and political decentralization; and the impact of political institutions and actors on public service and goods provision. Overall, the programme seeks to understand the determinants of accountability and institutional and government quality at different levels and their influence on societal advancement, with the aim of producing valuable knowledge and insights for policy-making and institutional design.
