Yesterday, Wednesday 18 September, the Catalan Minister for Research and Universities, Núria Montserrat, visited the University of Barcelona to see first-hand the UB’s facilities and its strategic lines of research and teaching. Accompanied by the rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, the minister toured the faculties of Pharmacy and Food Sciences and the faculties of Physics and Chemistry (Diagonal Campus), as well as the Historic Building.
The minister visited first the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, where she was received by the rector, the vice-rector for Research, Jordi Garcia, and the dean of the Faculty, Jordi Camarasa. During the visit, Montserrat got a close look at the work carried out in the Microbiology and Pharmacology sections of the Faculty, sharing impressions with members of the academic community. This faculty was the first to move, in the mid-1950s, from the Historic Building to the Diagonal Campus, and the rector expressed the need for a new building on the occasion of this visit.
The Catalan Minister moved on to the building of the Faculties of Physics and Chemistry, where she enjoyed a panoramic view of the Diagonal Campus and the Barcelona Science Park from the roof of the campus. This point of the itinerary allowed her to highlight the importance of the campus as a space for the generation of knowledge and scientific innovation with the projects of the new Diagonal Health Hub and the MIES-UB to promote research and talent in the fields of mathematics, computer science, economics and health.

Minister Montserrat toured several faculties of the Diagonal Campus and the Historic Building, and met the UB’s governing team.
After visiting the Diagonal Campus, Montserrat went to the Historic Building, where she was received by several members of the UB government team. After signing the University’s book of honour, the minister had a brief meeting in which they discussed relevant issues on university policy and future prospects in research and teaching. The meeting was attended by the UB’s general manager, Glòria Matalí, the secretary general, Marina Solé, and several vice-rectors, including Ernest Abadal, Elena Lauroba and Raúl Ramos.
The event closed with an exchange of ideas on the University’s strategic projects, with special emphasis on the areas of research, sustainability and internationalization, to strengthen collaboration between the UB and the Department of Research and Universities. The minister highlighted the “central, systemic, strategic and driving role of the UB, and expressed the desire to move forward together to achieve a higher education system of excellence and sustainability”. On the other hand, the rector mentioned “the need to commit to a research system of excellence if we want to continue to be a first-rate university”.
