Accompanied by the rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, and the director of the Barcelona Science Park, Maria Terrades, Sílvia Paneque visited the facilities of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) and got to meet part of the University’s governing team.
Rector Guàrdia told the Catalan minister about the key role that the PCB represents in the European knowledge ecosystem, with more than 100,000 m² built and some 3,453 professionals working mainly in the health sector. Then, Terrades also explained the composition of the Park and the technological and scientific infrastructure it houses.
The minister visited two leading facilities in innovation and technology, such as the Smart Nano-Bio-Devices laboratory of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the pilot plant of Qiagen, both located in the Cluster II building of the PCB.
Josep Samitier, director of the IBEC, and Samuel Sánchez, leader of the Smart Nano-Bio-Devices group, accompanied the minister on a tour of the lab, where nanorobots and new devices based on hybrid systems are being developed to fight cancer. The Catalan minister visited Qiagen’s pilot plant, where molecular diagnostic and immunoassay systems for clinical applications are manufactured and marketed.
During the tour, the UB vice-rector for Strategic Projects, Jordi Bosch, explained to minister Paneque the main strategic projects that the University has planned for the coming years, such as the MIES project and the new Diagonal Clínic Campus - University of Barcelona.
Paneque was able to discuss these projects in detail with part of the University’s governing team during a meeting aimed at reinforcing the collaboration between the University and the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition.
