The University of Barcelona’s Governing Team, led by the rector, Joan Guàrdia, was received today by the mayor of Cervera, Jan Pomés, on an institutional visit marking the UB’s 575th anniversary.  The Rector’s Team also visited the building of the University of Cervera and the UB Learning and Research Resources Centres (CRAI) deposited in this institution.

Pomés welcomed the rector and vice-rectors at the Cervera town council, and called for “involvement in recovering university activity in the city.” Guàrdia added: “Cervera is and will be a key piece for the university development of Catalonia.”

After the visit to the town council, the UB’s Governing Team went to the University of Cervera, where they toured the most emblematic areas of the historic building. The director of the CRAI, Judit Casals, showed them the Dipòsit de Cervera, located in the north wing of the building. With a usable surface area of 1,182 m2 and a collection of more than 250,000 volumes, this repository aims to store low-use materials from the CRAI libraries cannot be stored for consultation and reuse in other CRAI libraries.

Promoting the proposal for a new UB statute

In Cervera, the Rector’s team also met to strategically plan the University’s lines of governance for the academic year 2025-2026, marked by the institutional anniversary and the launch of the Faculty 18 initiative, dedicated to Palestine. The meeting also served to finalize the proposal for a new UB statute, which will have to be approved by the Governing Council and the Senate in the coming months.

Cervera forms part of the history of the University of Barcelona. The defeat of Barcelona after the siege of 1714 and the end of the War of the Spanish Succession led to the closure of the six general studies in Catalonia and their transfer to the city of Cervera, where they operated as a university from 1717 until 1837, when Barcelona regained its university.
