Next Tuesday, 3 December, the University of Barcelona will commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities with the session “Units i unides per l’esport” (“United sport”), which will take place in the Aula Magna of the Historic Building at 10.30 a.m. The event, which includes talks, a round table and a musical closing ceremony, aims to highlight the role of inclusive sports as a tool for social transformation, as well as recognising the efforts of people with disabilities within and outside the university community.

The day will begin with a welcome session by Joan Guàrdia, the rector of the UB, and a presentation by Montserrat Puig, the vice-rector for Equality, Inclusion and Gender. Then, Maria Carbó, lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology, and Maria dels Àngels Renom, coordinator at the UB’s Baskin at University project, will explain how sport can become an inclusive tool for promoting equal opportunities for people with disabilities. Baskin at University is a pioneering project that combines sports and inclusion, in which people with and without disabilities work together in the same team.

The day will continue with a round table discussion featuring four UB students who stand out for both their academic careers and their involvement in sports. Adrià Alonso, who has an intellectual disability, took the university extension programme in User, Citizen and Client Care Service at the Faculty of Psychology. Brothers Raül and Dani Ruiz, with hearing disabilities, are studying biochemistry at the UB and the National Institute of Physical Education and Sport of Catalonia (INEFC), respectively. Finally, Míriam Monterde, a visually impaired medical student, will share her personal experience on sports and university life.

The event will be closed by Marta Ferrer, the vice-rector for Students and University Life.  It will be followed by a musical performance by the Xilòfon dels Joves group from the Can Ponsic Municipal School of Music.

An inclusive and accessible event

The event will have sign language interpretation and live subtitling, reinforcing the UB’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

This activity is part of the UB’s actions to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities, such as the university study programme for people with intellectual disabilities, which began more than ten years ago. In addition, projects such as Baskin UB show the transformative role of sports, not only as a physical activity, but also as a space for coexistence, diversity and equality.
