This is the first joint action of the agreement, signed by both institutions last September, with the aim that the two faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences, the two reference centres of the university and research system in Catalonia, collaborate in training, research, innovation and transfer activities. The summer school takes place today and tomorrow at the UAB, at the Casa Convalecència (Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret, 171, Barcelona).

Today, the rectors of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Javier Lafuente, kicked off the first edition of the UAB & UB Med Summer School, a summer school that brings together students from the third to sixth year of the degree in Medicine at both universities. The summer school takes place today and tomorrow at the UAB, at the Casa Convalecència (Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret, 171, Barcelona).
The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, said that this first edition of the summer school is a step forward in the integral collaboration between the UB and the UAB, both leading institutions in health studies in Catalonia: “Barcelona is a pole of attraction for talent in the biomedical field. Of every 100 researchers who come to Barcelona, two thirds work in biomedicine or health technology. We are a leading health hub”.
Guàrdia, who highlighted the “power” of the UB and UAB hospital network, said that the future of this close collaboration between the two centres “can only be bright”.
The rector of the UAB, Javier Lafuente, told the students to “make the most” of these two days of summer training and thanked the deans of the faculties of the UB, Antoni Trilla, and the UAB, Salvador Navarro, for their efforts to continue this collaboration because “together we can go further”. Lafuente emphasised that this alliance in health sciences includes “the major reference hospitals not only in Catalonia but in Spain as a whole”, which should have a very positive impact on the training of future health professionals in Spain: “Nowhere else could you be better trained”, he said, addressing the students.
Lafuente emphasised that the aim of this initiative is to influence “the quality of our graduates”. The UB and UAB faculties of Medicine are, above all, “at the service of the needs of society and, therefore, also in a position to meet and respond to the needs of the country, as we saw two years ago with the expansion of places on the degree in Nursing”.
He recalled that, “from the two centres, around 680 graduates leave each year, or in other words, more than 60% of the graduates of the public system of Catalan universities”, and declared: “Whether more are needed or just to adjust the specialities, that is up to the political leaders to determine, but what is certain is that our doctors are the best formats”.
Then, Antoni Trilla and Salvador Navarro, deans of the faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB and the UAB, took part in the opening of the course to invite students to take advantage of the relationships that can be established thanks to this joint initiative and encouraged them to take an active part and help to value this first experience with their comments.

The UAB & UB Med Summer School is the first joint action of the two universities, which signed a strategic collaboration agreement last September to cooperate in medicine and health sciences.
A broad healthcare fabric
The UAB&UB Med Summer School is part of the collaboration established by the two universities in the agreement signed by rectors Guàrdia and Lafuente at the beginning of the academic year 2023-2024. The joint work of both universities in the practical training of the different health specialities is the first area in which this alliance is being developed, which was presented at a meeting in Barcelona last September with representatives of the health institutions.
The UB and the UAB are characterized by the fact that they link their training and research activities in health sciences to the main health institutions in the surrounding area. The UB currently has five university hospitals and twelve associated hospitals and centres, while the UAB has four university hospitals (and five hospital teaching units, including the one on the Bellaterra campus) and six associated hospitals. These include the most important university hospitals in the country, such as Bellvitge, Clínic, Sant Joan de Déu, Mutua de Terrassa, Moisés Broggi, Vall d'Hebron, Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Germans Trias and Parc Taulí.
The UB’s Faculty of Medicine, the oldest in Catalonia, and that of the UAB, have trained many doctors in Catalonia and Spain, and are always at the top of the list of medical schools in Spain and in international rankings.
The agreement includes, in addition to joint training activities such as this summer school, the exchange of work experience placements in hospitals and health centres for sixth-year medical students. Each year, both centres will offer a certain number of places for this exchange, and those who wish to apply must follow a selection process. Therefore, students, in addition to having the hospitals and health centres of the university where they are enrolled as possible internship destinations, will also have the option of applying for one center of the other institution. There are also plans to set up new joint elective courses with teaching staff from both faculties.
