The congress includes many lectures and talks on biomaterials, material characterization and modelling, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship, nanomaterials, advanced materials, materials for energy and environment, surface engineering and treatments and other related areas.

The opening takes place on Wednesday 18 June, at 10 a.m., in the Paranymph Hall of the Historic Building of UB. The personalities who participate in the opening are: Dr Jordi Alberch, vice-rector for Research, Innovation and Transfer; Dr Josep maria Guilemany, president of the National Congress of Materials; Dr Pere Lluís Cabot, dean of the Faculty of Chemistry of UB; Dr Paloma Fernández, president of the Spanish Society of Materials, and Dr Carlos Andradas, president of the Federation of Spanish Scientific Societies. The opening speech, entitled “Nuevos retos para los metales en Ciencia de Materiales” is pronounced by Dr Javier Gil Mur, professor from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).

 

Lecture and exhibition about Santiago Ramón y Cajal

At midday, Dr Mercè Durfort, from the Department of Cell Biology, gives the lecture “Dr. Santiago Ramón i Cajal: la gestació dʼun Premi Nobel”. Later, the exhibition “Santiago Ramon i Cajal a la Universitat de Barcelona” (Santiago Ramon y Cajal at the University of Barcelona) is opened by the Dr Lourdes Cirlot, vice-rector for Institutional Relations and Culture of UB. The exhibition is located at the first floor landing of the Rectorʼs Offices and has been organised by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Institutional Relations and Culture of UB.

 

Round table talk on science policy

On Friday 20th June, at 1 p.m., the round table talk on science policy takes place. Participating experts are: Dr Jordi Alberch, vice-rector for Research, Innovation and Transfer; Dr Enric Canela, vice-rector for Science Policy; Dr Xavier Gil Mur, from UPC; Dr Jacobo Santamaria, manager of the National Materials Plan of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO); Dr Josep Martorell, director general for Research of the Government of Catalonia; Dr Margarethe Hofmann, president of the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS), and Dr Daniel Forlan, president of PIMEC Foundation.

The National Congress of Materials happens within the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Thermal Spray Centre of UB (CPT), the only centre in Spain fully dedicated to research, development and innovation of coatings within thermal spray technologies. From 21 to 23 May, the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya hosted the International Thermal Spray Conference (ITSC 2014). The organising scientific committee was composed by some UB experts: Josep M. Guilemany, Irene García Cano and Sergi Dosta, from CPT.
