The University of Barcelona leads the translation into Catalan of the WCAG 2.2 international guidelines for an accessible website

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Barcelona has led the translation into Catalan of the WCAG 2.2, a set of guidelines and advice for making web content accessible to everyone, especially those with disabilities. The translation, recently published, has had the collaboration of the teaching innovation group Adaptabit and the UB’s Language Services, as well as the support of the TERMCAT Terminology Centre.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Barcelona has led the translation into Catalan of the WCAG 2.2, a set of guidelines and advice for making web content accessible to everyone, especially those with disabilities. The translation, recently published, has had the collaboration of the teaching innovation group Adaptabit and the UB’s Language Services, as well as the support of the TERMCAT Terminology Centre.
WCAG 2.2 provides a framework for the application of the Royal Decree on accessibility of public sector websites and applications for mobile devices. This regulation requires public administration portals, but also private companies with a staff of more than 100 people or a turnover of more than six million euros, to comply with these guidelines to make their websites accessible.
Until now, WCAG 2.2 was only available in English and there was no official translation in Catalan, unlike WCAG 2.1 and previous versions, which were also translated by the UB. According to W3C forecasts, from now on, work will be carried out on WCAG 3.0, which is broader in scope and with a different philosophy, but which will not cancel WCAG 2.2. For this reason, a significant amount of work has been carried out to thoroughly revise the translation.
The translation and revision team, headed by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, is transversal and interdisciplinary, and incorporates different members of the academic community. Mireia Ribera Turró (Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science and Adaptabit), Rubén Alcaraz Martínez (Faculty of Information and Audiovisual Media and Adaptabit), Mercè Costa Cuberta (Faculty of Economics and Business and Adaptabit), and Anna Grau Parés, Àngels Egea Puigventós and Xavier Albons Gomila (Language Services) have participated in the coordination. Afra Pascual Almenara (University of Lleida, Griho) and the TERMCAT Terminology Centre collaborated.
The final version has had the active participation and unanimous approval of a group of institutions and companies from civil society, as entities representing the interests of different groups of people with disabilities. The participating entities are the following: Barcelona City Council; Associació Interacció Persona-Ordinador; Associació de Famílies amb Dificultats Aprenentatge Catalunya; Associació Discapacitat Visual: B1+B2+B3; Scientific Association for the Evaluation and Measurement of Human Values; Catalan Committee of Representatives of People with Disabilities; CRAB Aprenem Autisme Foundation; Catalan Autism Federation; Federation of Catalan Associations for the Promotion of People with Deafness; Federation of Deaf People of Catalonia; Federació Veus; Community Development Foundation; Guttmann Insitute Foundation; No Somos Invisibles Foundation; SIDAR Foundation; Hiberus; Ilunion Accesibilidad; La Page; MTP, Methods and Technology of Systems and Processes; Multisigns; Olga Carreras Montoto; Plexus Tech; Quinera; Mental Health Catalonia; TERMCAT; Torresburriel Estudio; TOTHOMweb; UTAC, and W3C Hispano.
