The University of Barcelona will host, on 4 June, from 10.00 am to 1.00 noon, at the Aula Magna of the Historic Building (Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 585), the 13th Environmental Conference jointly organized with Família Torres and an expert committee led by Tomàs Molina, meteorologist doctor in Communication and adjunct professor at the UB’s Department of Applied Physics.

This year’s event, tiled “Environmental Justice: Rethinking Capitalism to Avoid Collapse”, will bring together leading experts and activists to explore how environmental law and a profound rethinking of the economic model can become key tools for urgent and effective action in the face of the current environmental crisis.

The meeting will be opened by Joan Guàrdia, rector of the UB, and Miguel A. Torres, president of Família Torres, together with Tomàs Molina, who will chair the session. The first intervention will be brought by David Lizoain, director-general of Economic Analysis and Forecasting at the Government of Catalonia, who will talk about decarbonization of the economy in times of geopolitical uncertainty.

The conference will be structured around two blocks: a first block of presentations focused on climate justice and environmental law, and a second block with a more economic focus, aimed at rethinking current capitalism to achieve a fairer model. It will end with a round table that will give a voice to several experts and climate activists to discuss economic, environmental and social aspects.

In the first block, Mar Campins, professor of Public International Law at the UB, will analyse the main challenges in terms of climate justice for the international community, while Francesco Sindico, professor of International Environmental Law at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow), will address the role of the courts in the climate crisis. To close this first part, Miguel Pajares, PhD in Social Anthropology and author of the book Refugiats Climàtics, will talk about climate migration and its implications.

In the second part of the conference, Jordi Roca, professor of Economics at the UB, will give a talk to analyse how to contribute to a paradigm shift that integrates sustainability and social justice. Raimon Puigjaner, co-founder and president of B Lab Spain, will present his vision of how new business models, based on B Corp certification, are transforming the global economy to benefit people, communities and the planet.

The conference will end with a round table titled “Social and climate justice in a convulsive world”, with the participation of experts such as Claudia Custodio, researcher at the Observatory on Debt in Globalization; Xavier López, director-general of the UB Solidarity Foundation; Dolors Camats, director of the Catalunya Europa Foundation, and Carlos G. Paret, economist and coordinator of Political Advocacy at Greenpeace.

Ernest Abadal, deputy vice-rector to the Rector and for Teaching and Research Staff at the UB, and Miguel A- Torres and Tomàs Molina will close the conference.
