Joan Elias and Màrius Rubiralta are the two candidates who contest the UB Rector's Office in a second round that will take place tomorrow, December 1.
In the evening, once the ballot boxes are closed, the Aula Magna of the Historic Building will be opened to the public. This room will be the place where, at about 22 h, the numbers of the results of counting up the votes and the turnout will be announced. The first appearance of the elected rector will also take place in the Aula Magna. From 21.30 h, all this information will be broadcast live through the website of the UB and its video portal UBTV.
In the first round of the elections, Joan Elias obtained 26,03 % of the weighted vote, and Màrius Rubiralta got 25,78 % of the weighted vote. The other candidates were Joan Guàrdia, who obtained 25,65 %, David Vallespín (13,80 %), Norbert Bilbeny (6,13 %), Rafael Franco (1,36 %) and Eduardo L. Mariño (1,26 %). According to these results, none of the seven candidates got the overall majority necessary to be elected rector in this first round. Thus, it is necessary to perform a second round in which the candidate who gets the highest number of votes will be elected as rector.
It will be the fourth time that, according to the current regulations, the new rector will be elected by the university community through direct election and universal suffrage. The vote is weighted and its value depends on the university group to which you belong. Each group has a different percentage stated in the UB statutes: permanent professors (2.009 people) computes 51 % of the total; other teaching and research staff (4.074 people), 9 % of the total; students (54.645 people), 30 %; and administrative and service staff (2.270 people), 10 %.
