The University of Barcelona leads the ranking of the report on online reputation among Catalan Universities

The high presence on social networks during 2016 lists the University of Barcelona as the first university in the ranking of awareness in online conversation. The UB leads the list regarding the number of mentions and number of users, and has the highest position regarding publication reach. These are just some of the most significant data of the Report on online reputation among Catalan Universities for 2016.
The assessed platforms of this report have been Twitter, Facebook (public version), Instagram, YouTube, Vimeo, Google +, websites, online journals, blogs and forums. The total collected amount of data from the Catalan universities has been of 381.099 mentions between January 1 and December 31 (2026), and the potential reach of all the analyzed universities is estimated to be 128.020.200.

The UB leads in number of publications and users and is the first one regarding presence in online media
The UB is the center holding the first position in the ranking regarding its presence on the social networks during 2016, with more than 72.000 appearances, followed by UAB, with 52.000. The number of users, almost 28.000, lists the University of Barcelona on top of the list, followed by UAB (18.968) and UPF (14.416). The UB holds also the first position regarding the reach of a publication regarding its number of users and mentions.
Catalan universities have appeared in online journals, websites and blogs, more than 55.000 times. The University of Barcelona, present in a 23% of these communications, is listed as the center with more online media reach.
Catalan prevails in all universitiesʼ networks
One of the aspects shown in this study is that, all Catalan universities have a predominance of the Catalan language in online conversations (61,42%), while messages in Spanish represent the 29,94% of the total. However, English is used a 6,7% and other languages represent a 2,2%.
Favourite topics
Among the seasonal topics are meetings, symposiums and rankings. Also, May and November are the months with more conversation in topics regarding the universityʼs regular activities.
University crises are highly viral but short-lived
Online conversation has had, obviously, episodes of crises that, despite being highly viral, have had a short life. Some of the most known crises have been controversies due two professorsʼ tweets (Àlex de Jaureguízar from the UB, and Héctor López Bofill from the UPF), conflicts between students and representatives of the Catalan Civil Society in UAB, the bus accident in Freginals where a group of Erasmus students of the UB died, and students locking themselves inside the university at UdL.
