The Governing Council of the University of Barcelona, gathered in extraordinary session, has approved today, with 32 votes in favour and 3 blank votes, the budget of the University of Barcelona for 2019, which rises to 381,1 million euros, a 4.3 % more compared to 2018, which was of 370,6 million euros. The accounts of the UB are still showing a balance budget between income and expenses. The Board of Trustees of the UB will have to ratify these budgets on Thursday, December 20.
The project income includes the expected increase of funds from Generalitat de Catalunya, which goes from 214 to 226 million euros, increasing by 5.6 %. The final income is another matter that has been touched, which goes from 32 to 34 million euros.
Regarding the chapter on expenses, regarding 2019 the UB increases the chapter on staff up to 263,8 million euros, 4.2 % more than 2018. This difference responds to the income raise that has been carried out during the last year. Other rises are represented by investments, which go from 12.4 to 13.6 million euros, and expenses with final funds, that increase up to 34.3 million euros.
The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Elias, noted that the expected contribution by the Generalitat de Catalunya -226.3 million euros- does not cover the entire expense on the staff, 263.8 million euros. The manager, Josep Oriol Escardibul, has insisted on this issue and has stated there is an offset of 37 million euros that has to cover the UB with other issues, since the Generalitat only covers the 89 % of staff expenses. This involves an important limitation in the economic management of the UB, Escardibul noted.
