The Area of Further Learning of the UB inaugurates new headquarters in Sant Joan Despí

On Monday 13 July, the Area of Further Training of the University of Barcelona inaugurated its new headquarters in Sant Joan Despí. The rector of the UB, Dídac Ramírez, and the mayor of the town, Antoni Poveda, chaired the opening event of the new place, located in Torre de la Creu, an emblematic Art Nouveau building of Sant Joan Despí. The event was attended by the director of the Area of Further Training, Xavier Varea, and other representatives of both the University and local government.
The new building is added to the two other places owned by the Area of Further Training: in Barcelona, the Casa Jeroni Granell (its main headquarters), and in Badalona the El Carme Culture Centre. With this new centre, the UB achieves its desire to expand into the Barcelona metropolitan area with high quality academic offerings.
Language and other courses
UB academic offerings in Sant Joan Despí have started with the course Sant Joan Despí, la vila del Modernisme, which takes place until 17 July and it is part of the summer courses Els Juliols de la UB.
In October, the School of Modern Languages (EIM) of the University is going to offer courses of English (28 groups), French (2) and German (2). Like in Badalona, Sant Joan Despí citizens will enjoy special registration fees and four scholarships will be granted to students with special economic needs.
Since the new headquarters opened its doors in June, around six hundred people have asked for information and 110 level tests have been carried out. The period to enrol on language courses was opened on 6 July. In only one week, 26 students have enrolled on a course. Enrolment must be completed at EIM's Student Service Centre at Torre de la Creu, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. (from Monday to Thursday) and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (on Friday)
