Marta Cervera Sospedra, a doctoral student of Biomedicine, will represent the University of Barcelona in the “Present your thesis in 4 minutes” competition, from the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI). Cervera won the UB competition and will now compete against doctoral students from other universities, on July 3.

Marta Cervera is conducting her research at the UB’s Production and Validation Center of Advanced Therapies (Creatio). Her research focuses on the development of in vitro models for the study of Huntington’s disease. These models are an important alternative to current techniques and would allow a significant reduction in animal testing. The researcher defends dissemination: “It is important for science to reach the patients, for they should know that there are people working on their pathology”. Regarding the competition, she says the hardest part was “using a language that is understandable to everyone”. “You always have to think about those that are listening to you”, she notes. Josep M. Canals, professor of Biomedicine at the UB, is the supervisor of Cervera’s doctoral thesis.

The finalist in the UB’s internal competition was Jesús Daniel Gómez, also from the doctoral programme in Biomedicine.

The FCRI organizes the “Present your thesis in 4 minutes” competition together with 12 Catalan universities, with the support from the Government of Catalonia. Doctoral students from any discipline participating in the competition have to explain their research studies using a plain and understandable language for an audience, in no more than four minutes. All the information is available on La UB Divulga.
