The University of Barcelona ranks among the best in the world in thirty-three disciplines in the Shanghai Ranking

​​​​​​​The University of Barcelona is among the best universities worldwide in thirty-three of the fifty-five scientific areas analysed in the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2024. In ten of the subjects analysed, the UB is among the top 100 in the world: mathematics, ecology, food science and technology, human biology, clinical medicine, public health, nursing, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, political science and public administration.

​​​​​​​The University of Barcelona is among the best universities worldwide in thirty-three of the fifty-five scientific areas analysed in the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2024. In ten of the subjects analysed, the UB is among the top 100 in the world: mathematics, ecology, food science and technology, human biology, clinical medicine, public health, nursing, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, political science and public administration.
 
The UB ranks particularly highly in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, with 27th place in the world. In food science and technology, clinical medicine, nursing and political science, it is ranked among the 75 best centres in the world. There has been an advance in rankings from previous editions for mathematics, earth sciences, geography, ecology, environmental sciences and engineering, food science and technology, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, political science, public administration, and hospitality and tourism management.


According to the results of the new ranking, the UB is the state leader in 14 disciplines. Specifically, it is the sole leader in environmental sciences and engineering, water resources, biological sciences, human biology, clinical medicine, public health, nursing, medical technology, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, and public administration. In addition, it shares leadership with other state institutions in physics, earth sciences, biomedical engineering and political science.

In terms of the top-ranked institutions, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have the most disciplines in first position: fourteen and four, respectively.

The Shanghai Ranking classifies universities in fifty-five disciplines, grouped into five areas: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. The indicators it measures are the number of publications, the number of publications in high-impact journals, the normalized citation impact, the percentage of internationally co-authored publications and the awards won by the PDI (teaching and research staff).
